There was a three-way tie for this year’s recipients of the Maryland Heavyweight Timber Championship among Jesse O (left), Daddy in the Dark (center) and Mystic Strike (right). Daddy in the Dark, owned and trained by H. Bruce Fenwick, won a Heavyweight Timber at the Elkridge-Harford Point-to-Point in April with jockey Eric Poretz. Mystic Strike, owned by Upland Partners and trained and ridden by Mark Beecher this season, won the Heavyweight Timber at the Green Spring Point-to-Point. Maryland-bred Jesse O of Flying Horse Farm, won - a Heavyweight Timber at the Fair Hill Point-to-Point, ridden by Matthew D. Martinez for trainer Jazz Napravnik. s d r f t t


In recognition of junior rider Heidi Her- zog’s sportsmanship, horsemanship, talent and dedication, she received this year’s Jonathan Kiser Memorial Schol- arship. Chosen by the MSA board, Her- zog will receive a position as a working student for a week with NSA trainer William Dowling and tuition to the Na- tional Steeplechase Foundation Sum- mer Steeplechase Camp/Clinic. Herzog has been racing since 2007.


Competing in 33 races together since 2013, Erin Swope and her mount Sweet Talking Guy (not pictured) were presented with the Hurdy Gurdy Award this year. The Hurdy Gurdy is given to a racing pair that has deep foxhunting roots, as do Swope and her Maryland-bred Sweet Talking Guy to a tee. Swope is also a previous Kiser Scholar and the fi rst woman to win the Hurdy Gurdy!


Scarlet Davies, daughter of jockey/ trainers Joe and Blythe Davies, re- ceived the Leading Junior Small Pony Rider award. Davies saw major suc- cess with wins in the Jr. Field Mas- ter’s Chase – Small Ponies race at the Fair Hill Point-to-Point Races and The Howard County Cup Races aboard Hickory, owned by her brother Teddy Davies and trained by Ashton Williams.

With three of his six career wins achieved this season, Charlie Marquez was named the Leading Junior Horse Rider. Marquez won on his Thorough- bred Mast Strike, trained by Betty Mc- Cue, at the Green Spring Point-to- Point, Maryland Junior Hunt Cup and the Howard County Cup Point-to-Point.

Patrick Gallagher, who only broke into pony racing last year, received the Junior Cubbing Scholarship. He captured three wins in the Small Pony Flat Races at the Fair Hill Point-to-Point, Maryland Junior Hunt Cup and Potomac Hunt Races aboard Hoof Hearted, owned and trained by Mimi Schmitz.


Hill Tie, by Dance With Ravens and out of Ready to Love, received the Maryland-Bred $500 bo- nus this year. Bred by Corbett Farm, in Monkton, andJohn Secor, Hill Tie is owned by Sports- mans Hall and trained by Joseph Davies. He won three races this season including the Team Chase – Fastest Time at the Foxhall Team Chase and the Amateur Allowance Timber at the Grand National.
