passed the FY19 Agriculture Appropriations bill, with a provision to maintain the ban on slaughter of horses and burros for human con- sumption in the U.S. It prevents spending by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the inspection of horse slaughterhouses, eff ectively banning horse slaughter in the U.S.


New Eventing Stars Made Offi cial


During last month’s FEI General Assembly in Montevideo, Uruguay, the 2018 rule change modifi cations for the upper levels of eventing were formally approved. Several changes to the


current “stars” levels will be implemented start- ing in 2019. Changes include a new 1.05-meter Introductory level as well as the 5* levels. Ac- cording to the FEI, the levels will be reclassi- fi ed as stated below. • 5* Long (CCI 5* L) – Dressage and jump- ing will be at the new 5* level where the cross- country will be similar to the current 4* level. T is is the format that will be used for the Olympics and World Equestrian Games. • 5* Major (CCI 5* Major) – T is level will be the same as the current CCI 4* with a few ad- ditional requirements.

Carroll Co. Young Marines Help Veterans On June 9-10, a group from the Carroll County Young Marines worked on a service project for Taking the Lead, Inc., at Timberbrook Farm in


northern Baltimore County. Taking the Lead, Inc., provides animal assisted therapy services to individuals with physical and mental disabilities. T e group from Carroll County Young Marines, led by Ralph Dornon, repaired fencing, performed maintenance work on the riding arena, and conducted general landscaping around the farm. T e youth group also practiced their survival skills by camping on the property overnight during the project. “We have about 80 acres here at Timberbrook Farm. It’s so labor intensive to maintain such a large facility. T e Young Marines are helping us serve as many people as we can, including veterans,” said Conchita Whitaker, President of Taking the Lead, Inc.
