THE EQUIERY’S ANNUAL PHOTO CONTEST We asked and you answered… in volumes… making our fi rst annual Equiery Photo Contest a resounding success! With 100 readers submitting

281 photos, our committee of judges had their work cut out for them. Judges looked for one photo to be named Grand Champion to grace this year’s August Equiery cover in addition to choosing the top photos for each of our contest’s categories. Recognition has also been given to the top Junior, Amateur and Professional photo based on our judges’ votes. What is even more impressive than the large numbers of photos that were submitted was the diversity of the subjects presented. From Maryland’s state sport of jousting, to aerial views of hay fi elds, to up close and personal with our equine friends, the photos we received truly represented the vastness of Maryland’s equestrian community. In addition to the photos we have chosen to print here, all photos submitted will be showcased on equiery.com and our social media sites. Several photos from this contest will also be displayed at this year’s Maryland Horse Forum!

2019 Grand Champion Choosing the best photo to place on our

August cover was not an easy task. T rough the fi rst round of voting, 281 photos were narrowed down to eight that our judges felt were cover-worthy. From those eight, a few were cut out due to fi le size or image quality, leaving the judges with six that were then sent to our Art Director for cover mock ups. At this point, the real debating began as judges expressed why they felt one photo or another made a better cover than the others. In the end, it was this unique photo titled,

2019 GRAND CHAMPION “Whistling Hill Trail Ride” by Kurt Pluckhorn

281 Photos Showcasing Maryland’s Horse Industry Nationally Recognized Equine Welfare Program METS 2019 Maryland Horse Forum Program Inside!

“Whistling Hill Trail Ride,” taken by ama- teur photographer Kurt Pluckhorn of Boonsboro that was named Grand Champion. T e photo shows three riders out for a hack passing along a familiar Maryland landscape… hay and corn. T e colors and perspective made this image our top pick. Pluckhorn’s photo also wins Best Amateur Photographer and Best Horse Farm Life categories.

Reserve Champion Top Professional Top Junior

Our Junior Photographer winner is Kelly Barry of

Amateur photographer Erin Brodie of An- napolis submitted this photo called “Equine Perspective” that nearly made it as a cover pho- to. T e intimate detail Brodie captured, along with a self-portrait refl ected in the horse’s eye, is captivating. Although this image is a great stand-alone photo, there were some concerns about covering too much of the subject with the text required for our cover.

32 | THE EQUIERY | AUGUST 2019

Earlesville. Barry took this photo of Sienna Skys, owned by Maryann Luke of Silver Fern Farm at the 6-year-old gelding’s fi rst dressage show and Barry captured him beautifully, all shined up and decked out in bling.

One judge described this photo taken

by professional photographer Tara She- gogue (Damascus) of Taylor Polito and her Maryland-bred Sohaelah as worthy of a lifestyle magazine, and we agree! T e colors are spot on, the expression on Poli- to’s face is wonderful and the composition makes it a lovely photo overall and a stun- ning possible cover option. T is photo wins the Best Professional category.
