Magic, it was clear that she was a very friendly mare. Standing quietly on the cross-ties, ears forward, curious, and bright-eyed, Magic soaked up the grooming that her owner gave her while I listened to her story of her time with Magic, her management and care plan, and the type of home she felt would be ideal for her. From my complete assessment of her, I felt that with some training Magic could turn into a very talented and fun mare that someone could enjoy in any discipline. On my way back to the office from the assessment I called several METS partners who had offered to provide placement for horses in our program, Days End Farm Horse Rescue (DEFHR) being one of them. DEFHR almost immediately said that they would be able to take her. In a matter of less than one week, Magic was on her way to DEFHR, where she got her new name, Cordelia’s Charming Casino, as well as a start to a new life. Tis would turn out to be METS’ first official placement success story. Casino settled in well to her new transitional home at DEFHR. Almost instantly she became a farm favorite of the volunteers and staff. She was first to greet people in the field, craved attention from anyone who would give it, liked to escape from her tie station during feed time, and was full of personality. She took to her training with ease and enjoyed going offsite for trail rides, cross-country schooling, and events, including an ugly Christ- mas sweater-themed show at Loch Moy in December. It was no surprise the she gained a lot of interest from many people looking to adopt. One special person came along who was interested in Casino and

DEFHR knew that this person and the home that she could provide was an opportunity they just couldn’t pass up. Karen was a long-time DEFHR supporter and trusted previous adopter of a Toroughbred gelding named Emmett’s Eclipse. Karen had moved to Colorado and was looking for some horses to add to her new kid-focused program that included lessons and trail rides. Naturally, she sought to adopt another

horse from DEFHR. After speaking to DEFHR’s trainer Sara Strauss, Karen had Casino evaluated by a trainer and had a PPE by a vet. Casino passed with flying colors and preparations were made with a professional shipper to haul Casino out to Colorado shortly thereafter. Casino has now been settled into in her new home for a few weeks. Karen’s trainer has been working with her regularly on the trails to get her ready for their program and she is truly excelling at everything. Karen absolutely adores her new pony and it’s apparent that Casino has really hit the forever home jackpot! Casino’s entire transition process from start to finish was a success due

to teamwork and collaboration. From her original owner’s initial request for METS’ assistance all the way until she set foot on Colorado soil, Casino’s placement was only made possible because many people from literally across the nation stepped forward to make it happen. Tere are so many horses needing safe placement options and many of them can successfully find homes when we work together. Collaboration is a vital key to providing optimal assistance for horses in transition and Casino’s story is proof that it can happen!
