Procedural/operational changes, as established by the new guidelines, included updating company manuals and planned maintenance systems to reflect the drill schedules and recommended maintenance outlined in the guideline. Also a vessel specific Standby Operations Manual had to be developed, covering every detail of the guideline.


Dave Saunders, Assistant Superintendent with Atlantic Towing, was responsible for creating the template for the Standby Operations manuals and was also responsible for creating the required System Change Requests. The creation of these SCR and documents took a couple of months of hard work with good cooperation from vessel crews.


System changes included the addition of a fixed hydrogen sulphide monitoring system to protect the crews from the possible release of H2S during infield operations. Changes to the vessel’s hospitals and its equipment also had to be made, in order to effectively care for injured persons in the case of an emergency.


Finally, additional training, including H2S Alive training and enhanced requirements for first aid training, needed to be created and met. Dave Saunders was instrumental at establishing and closing operational gaps on the vessels.


“The amount of work put into this project from the different departments within Atlantic Towing and vessel crews was huge, covering everything from ordering 2256 pairs of wool socks, to the installation of a fixed H2S monitoring system,” says Saunders. “Great team work played a major part in the success of this project, highlighting amazing communication between all parties.”


The biggest challenge for a vessel to become certified under the new guidelines is to successfully complete the standby performance trials. On certification day, a series of tests need to be completed by the vessels crews and equipment that they are capable of saving lives during a time of crisis in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic. This is a timed certification test, which includes launching the Fast Rescue Craft (FRC) and performing a series of retrievals on 20 mannequins with the FRC and the Man Overboard (MOB) device. All nine Atlantic Towing Vessels were certified standby compliant ahead of the June 5th, 2016 deadline.


decontamination, reception, triage and treatment and complete the test within 75 minutes. This is vital training the crew must undergo to ensure they are prepared for any kind of unforeseen emergency.


The Breaux Tide successfully completed standby compliant trials, making it the first vessel to become certified. Rick Hamilton, Atlantic Towing’s Nova Scotia Offshore Superintendent, took the lead to work with Tidewater on this important milestone. “It has been a combination of great work by great people to make this endeavor successful,” says Swift. “Our nine vessels needed to go through the intense certification process. Our other four vessels, currently being built by Damen Shipyards, will be certified upon their delivery in 2017.”


The process for a vessel to become certified standby compliant under the new guidelines takes approximately one day of on-site demonstration to Transport Canada after weeks of preparation, and all vessels will need to continually participate in a renewal and recertification process every 2.5 years.
