NI loses two

stalwarts September marked the passing of two significant figures in Northern Ireland journalism.

David Morgan (56) was one of the best known journalists in Northern Ireland and was a former officer of the Northern Ireland Broadcasting Branch. He began his career as a reporter with the Irish News and subsequently worked for BBC NI and UTV. He retired as news editor at Citybeat radio in 2011. Paddy O'Flaherty (73) contributed to a range of BBC Radio Ulster programmes including Good Morning Ulster and Evening Extra.

Steeped in country music, he was well known for his programmes on Downtown Radio and later on BBC Radio Ulster. His

programme ‘Country Club’ had a significant following. He was also an

accomplished violinist.

12 Long-serving journalists honoured

Two Mid West journalists have been honoured for their distinguished service and long years working in the media. Both Tony Mulvey, who joined The Clare Champion no less than 58

years ago and Len Dineen, a Limerick broadcaster with LimerickLive 95fm were presented with this year’s Mid West Press Special Award. Finance Minister Michael Noonan presented the awards to the two

men during the Press Ball in the The Strand Hotel at the weekend on behalf of the hardworking committee headed by chairman, Ronnie Kirwan. Tony has written about all aspects of local life in his position with the

Champion while Len has not only commentated on local sports events but also presents a late night weekend music show. Caroline McNamara, wife of the late JT McNamara, a jockey who

died tragically following a fall, also accepted the biennial Shannon Group Media Merit award posthumously on behalf of her husband. The night, which was attended by over 250 people was a great

success. • The photograph taken by Michael Cowhey shows Len, Caroline and Tony with Minister Noonan.

Twenty years on, Veronica remembered The 20th anniversary of the death of Veronica Guerin was marked at a meeting of the Irish Executive Council of the NUJ in Dublin. Crime reporter, Veronica was murdered on the outskirts of Dublin in 1996. Gerry Carson, IEC cathaoirleach, said that the spirit of Veronica Guerin remained an inspiration to journalists across the world. “The spirit of Veronica Guerin, that determination and commitment to seeking the truth, has inspired journalists across the globe. Her legacy lives on and 20 years after her murder journalists continue to regard Veronica’s work as a touchstone. We know how painful the memory of Veronica’s murder is for her family and former colleagues and they are in our thoughts at this time.”

The Guerin Principles were adopted in October 1996 as a tribute to

Veronica and agreed by the NUJ, the Association of Independent Radio Stations, the National Newspapers of Ireland (now NewsBrands Ireland) and the Provincial Newspapers Association of Ireland (now Local Ireland).
