Refugees Welcomed: Canadians find new ways to help

Vancouver: Immigrant Services Society of BC has opened a $24.5 million Welcome Centre for refugees and immigrants, the first of its kind in the world. The facility includes short and long term housing, English language classes, employment and settlement programs, trauma care, child care, a youth centre, food security services, a banking kiosk and a legal clinic.

Edmonton Vancouver

Edmonton: This past summer, the St. Albert Canoe and Kayak Club offered a free

program for Syrian refugee children to address their fear of water. Many Syrian children associate water with danger and death because of the perilous sea journeys taken by thousands of Syrians escaping war. With the help of instructors, kids (and some parents) had fun in canoes and kayaks, helping them to see open water in a more positive light.
