Emmanuel is one of the Burundian


refugees living in the Nduta camp. A primary school teacher, he and his wife and two small children escaped from Burundi. “We left Burundi about 3 a.m. and walked for nine kilometres with only a few of our belongings on our head and our children on our back,” he says. “It took us about 12 hours to walk. The first thing I thought was how are we going to get food, water, and where are we going to sleep and spend our days?”

importance of his new home. “When I received a house I was overjoyed. I thanked God because my family had a place to properly settle in this house and life could continue normally,” he says. Having a house also means having an address. “If you have problems, you can get help. People also know where you are. They can find you at your house.”

Emmanuel and his family are far from alone. The forced displacement that the family has suffered has risen sharply in the past decade. At the end of 2015, Syria represented the top source country for refugees, followed by Afghanistan and Somalia. There
