The World of Learning Conference & Exhibition preview W
orld-renowned L&D experts from LinkedIn, Coca-Cola Enterprises and Capital One International are set to share their expertise at the
World of Learning Conference. Celebrating its 23rd year, the World of Learning Conference & Exhibition takes place on 29th and 30th September at Birmingham’s NEC. The annual conference combines extensive research with authoritative input from key industry figures to provide an insight into the major trends affecting the L&D professional.
HR Director at Capital One International, Karen Bowes, will deliver the opening address, exploring a key theme of the conference – ‘Creating a learning culture that drives business growth.’ Sarah Teagle, Business Partner at AstraZeneca, will also tap into this theme in ‘L&D as a true business partner addressing real business needs.’ How to cultivate ‘mental toughness’ will be
explored by Peter Clough, Chair in Applied Psychology at Manchester Metropolitan University in his keynote. He will outline the concept of mental toughness and detail how businesses can assess and develop this characteristic among staff. Peter explains: “Data shows that people who display characteristics of mental toughness are generally successful, achieving results and high ranking positions within organisations. They tend to be driven, competitive and ambitious – but not aggressive or domineering. Mental toughness applies to fundamental areas of a business such as staff development and leadership development. It is a core skill to have at hand when dealing with challenge and change in the working environment.”
32 Head of Learning Technologies at LinkedIn,
Robert Todd, is set to share the ‘Latest developments in learning technologies’ in his keynote. He outlines the role technology plays in L&D: “With tech learning, there are no ‘stupid questions’, it is non-judgmental. Technology enables employees to really embed their learning as it stays with people over the long haul – contrast this with a one-day session where there is a limited time to absorb the information. Instead the user is bombarded with so much information that they may feel overwhelmed. Technology also offers real flexibility – staff can access the learning at a time and location that suits them, offering the ultimate in convenience. Employees can learn as they go, providing the patience of a mentor within a system that is scalable. A degree of personalisation can also be put in place to further engage people. With a classroom, you are not getting a bespoke service.” Coca-Cola Enterprises’ European Senior L&D Manager Cathy Hoy will use her session to explore a current hot topic – how to develop an ‘agile business’, considering the evolving role of L&D teams. Her insightful talk forms part of a series of exclusive sessions for platinum delegates, which includes sessions on leadership and the future of blended learning. Hesketh Emden, will share advice on
‘developing an effective learning strategy with a limited budget and limited resources.’ Emden will partner with Robin Hoyle, author and consultant, who is also chairing the World of Learning Conference. In his role as Head of Training, Development and Leadership at NHS Property Services, Emden led the creation and development of the L&D function across the new organisation. There were many challenges as he explains: “With the creation of NHS Property Services
