Plans Its Annual Hill Days & Legislative Summit
A
pring is around the corner and so is ARA’s annual Hill Days and Legislative Summit. The dates are Monday, April 9 and Tuesday, April 10. The location is of course our Nation’s Capitol – Washington, D.C. The hotel is the perfectly situated Holiday Inn Capitol, within easy walking distance of the hallways of Congress. Who knows – there may even be cherry blossoms blooming.
The reason for this annual gathering is multi-fold. ARA leadership, members and staff gather to discuss important priorities, threats and opportunities on the state level. No one recycler is truly alone when facing issues that can impact their business. Each attendee always learns from their colleagues in how to handle state-level challenges. And each attendee has an opportu- nity to share the challenges that they face in their state and quite often ask for instructive input from their colleagues. In addition, ARA is poised to capitalize on a U.S. House of Representa- tives bill that would have automakers sharing data to identify all parts.
While your Washington advocates work daily with Congress, they are always asked by lawmakers about constituents. No one is better suited for conveying the industry’s needs than the recycler him/herself. The Congressional appointments are made by ARA staff so all an attendee needs to do is show up, receive hand- outs and a briefi ng on the issues and go to Congress. Other benefi ts arise from a robust attendance at this event. Networking with your colleagues from around the country and Canada only usually happens at the ARA Convention. This opportunity affords ARA members a much more intimate setting for in- dustry discussions, catching up with colleagues and comradery.
ARA has quite often heard that the quality of the guest speakers has made the trip worthwhile. A cou- ple years ago, Speaker John Boehner spoke to the Hill Days attendees. He spoke candidly and honestly and even took questions. Last year, Rep. Darrell Issa (R- CA) spoke to the group. Issa holds many car accessory patents and invented the Viper car alarm. That voice, “Protected by Viper-Stand back” was actually his. He fully understands the complexities of automo-
