Engaging Stakeholders & Culture Change

§ Environmental Education

There are a variety of teaching resources available that use the sport of sailing as a platform to teach STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and environmental education.

“Sailing programs nationwide are rich environments for STEM learning. Every time a student steps into a boat, pulls the tiller, or trims a sail they are experiencing powerful lessons. The weather above, the water below, and everything on the boat in-between can provide daily, real-world science lessons. Connecting these hands-on, experiential learning experiences to educational objectives can open up a whole new world of learning and opportunity to both sailors and sailing programs.” John O’Flaherty, Community Boating Center, Providence, RI

Program resources include*: § US Sailing Reach Initiative: 18 modules to implement in your summer program or in the shoulder seasons with school day programs or afterschool.

§ Sailors for the Sea: Kids Environmental Lesson Plans (KELP) are focused on educating students about the ocean’s influence on them and how they influence their ocean.

§ Rozalia Project: Conduct a marine debris cleanup during your program and track the data using the online app. A full lesson plan around marine debris can be found in the US Sailing Reach Program Educator Guide.
