LIGHTING
CASE STUDY - Hull College
H
Completed under the Mayor of London’s RE:FIT framework, Minimise Energy carried out the programme on behalf of Imtech Low Carbon Solutions, helping the council save £100,000 a year. The programme has cut annual carbon emissions by 452 tonnes - equivalent to the carbon footprint of a million car miles. The RE:FIT programme provides public bodies with the funding support needed to achieve substantial financial cost savings, improve buildings’ energy performance, and reduce carbon emissions. Haringey Council identified 16 buildings which could be grouped together in one RE:FIT programme. This would allow the council to upgrade its lighting infrastructure and improve sustainability, with both the equipment and installation financed under an energy performance contract.

Minimise Energy audited all 16 buildings, identifying savings and completing detailed calculations which formed the basis of the RE:FIT Energy
wapping outdated fluorescent and halogen lights for energy efficient LEDs in 16 key buildings has cut Haringey Council’s annual electricity consumption by more
than 850,000 kWh.
ull College is one of the largest establishments of its type in the UK with sites in Queen’s Gardens, Cannon Street and the KC
Stadium as well as in Goole, Harrogate and community locations around Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. All of the colleges form part of the Hull College Group and have over 25,000 students across its campuses. Chelt Electrical in Hull have recently installed over 600 Edgelit LED LuxPanel luminaires from Luceco throughout the College, the programme being funded by the Salix scheme. Established in 2004, Salix Finance Ltd delivers 100% interest-free capital to the public sector to improve their energy efficiency and reduce their carbon emissions with loans for energy efficiency projects. High efficiency, energy saving
LuxPanels from Luceco met the criteria for the Salix scheme. Quick and easy to install into exposed grid ceilings, the luminaires deliver up to 50,000 hours’ life with no maintenance requirements. Supplied with remote ‘plug and play’ drivers, LuxPanels are available in standard fixed output, dimmable and emergency options. The luminaires were installed in classrooms, circulation areas and corridors, lecture suites and relaxation areas as well as specialist facilities such as beauty and hairdressing salons.
Hull College offers courses at all levels with curriculum designed in partnership with local employers, ensuring that students have the best possible chance to succeed and progress into work. With an improved lit environment, energy savings and reduced maintenance, the lighting refurbishment has also proved to be a success.

Haringey Council cuts energy consumption by 68% with RE:FIT LED programme
Performance Contract. On appointment, Minimise finalised the new lighting design for each building, reducing the number of fittings needed wherever possible, installing lighting controls to maximise savings, and ensuring optimum lighting levels. The programme included seven libraries, an education centre, two nursing homes, three care centres, a museum housed within a listed building, and two council offices. All work had to be planned to minimise disruption and maximise safety. To do this, Minimise put in place a strategic plan which enabled the teams to work flexibly across up to five sites simultaneously, ensuring that work was completed at the optimum time for each location.
Throughout, Minimise worked closely with the council’s EPC contractor, Imtech Low Carbon Solutions, and council staff to ensure that a flexible approach was maintained at all times.
Now complete, the new LEDs have reduced lighting energy consumption by an average 68%, with the greatest savings achieved at the River Park offices, where additional lighting controls have resulted in a 77% reduction. Over five years this will save the council more than £500,000 and cut carbon emissions by 2,290 tCO2.

Sam Stageman, Sales Director at Minimise Energy, said: “This was a complex project. We needed to complete a thorough audit to identify accurate savings at the outset as this forms the basis of the energy performance contract.
“We also had to demonstrate significant savings, a workable return on investment timeframe and provide a flexible approach to accommodate these high footfall, public locations.
“Careful planning and good
communication was key - and the result is less energy used, ongoing savings, and improved lighting - all funded through the RE:FIT programme.”
