14.4.7.3 Fishing Effort 110. Patterns of effort distribution are shown in Figure 14.28 and Figure 14.29 for method and vessel size, respectively. Effort generally reflects landings; days at sea tend to be increased in high value rectangles. It should be noted however that there is not always a direct relationship. For example, despite similar total landings values, effort in the offshore cable analysis area (€4,002,293; 597 days) is approximately half that recorded for 31F1 (€4,005,102; 1092 days). This can be partially explained by the fact that sole, which is a high value species, forms a higher proportion of the total landings and that activity in 33F2 is characterised almost entirely by large Belgian beam trawlers, which have a higher catch rate per unit effort potential than smaller vessels using the same and other methods.
14.4.7.4 VMS Data 111. ILVO have supplied Belgian VMS data by large vessels (over 300hp and greater than 24m length) and Eurocutter fleets (less than 300hp and under-24m in length) integrated by effort only.
112. Figure 14.30 shows that activity by large segment vessels is widely distributed around the UK coast with high levels recorded in the southern North Sea, central English Channel, the Celtic Sea and central and eastern Irish Sea. In the vicinity of the East Anglia Zone, large segment vessels apply the highest levels of fishing effort (100 to 500 hours) along the western edge of the windfarm analysis area over the central section of the offshore cable corridor. Effort is more moderate within the windfarm analysis area, recording up to 100 hours. In contrast to Dutch vessels, effort by the Belgian fleet in the East Anglia THREE site itself is negligible (less than five hours).
113. The distribution of effort by the Eurocutter fleet is provided in Figure 14.31. Unlike large segment vessels, activity by the Eurocutter is concentrated in southern North Sea and the northern part of the English Channel. In general, activity by this category is less widespread than In the vicinity of the East Anglia Zone, the activity by larger vessels is located in western areas. This distribution can be partially explained by the fact that this class of Belgian vessel has historic access rights to UK waters within the 6 to 12nm limit. Only negligible effort levels are recorded in the East Anglia THREE site and offshore section of the cable corridor. Moderate effort levels ranging from five to 100 hours, are recorded over the central section of the offshore cable corridor within the inshore cable analysis area.
