immediately assembles an assault force led by a hardened Russian-born, British-raised soldier, Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth), and sends them off to Brazil to “acquire” Banner. In the first of the film’s sev- eral action sequences, once cornered in the bot- tling plant by the force out to capture him, Banner—predictably—loses control, and transforms into the mighty Hulk. Victorious in battle against the under-prepared force, he vanishes again. Awed by the intimidating power of the Hulk in all of his destructive wrath, Blonsky requests that General Ross reveal to him the truth about Ban- ner and the research program of which he once was a part. Although Banner himself was the re- sult of a freak accident, General Ross reveals to Blonsky that the program Banner was involved in was “bio-tech force enhancement,” research into the creation of a “super soldier.” Feeling his age, nearing the end of his fighting career, Blonsky’s curiosity is piqued by the “super soldier” program, and he asks to be given the requisite drugs. Gen- eral Ross readily agrees to the procedure, and Blonsky begins a painful series of injections. Meanwhile, Bruce Banner has returned to the United States. He shows up at Culver University in Virginia where his former love, Dr. Elizabeth “Betty” Ross (Liv Tyler, replacing Jennifer Connelly) teaches cellular biology. His specific purpose for
being there is to gain access to the school’s com- puter system in order to download the vital physiological information about himself and the experiments he was involved in, so that “Mr. Blue” might use the information to cure him. Success- ful in his attempt, Banner is preparing to leave town when he accidentally runs into Betty Ross and her boyfriend, Leonard (Ty Burrell). A tearful reunion occurs between the estranged couple, with the result that Betty’s jealous suitor contacts Gen- eral Ross. The next day, Ross’ forces descend upon the campus after Banner, accompanied by a greatly physically improved Emil Blonsky. Inspired by his improved physical improvement, Blonsky arrogantly confronts the Hulk—and is nearly killed by him. The battle draws several bystanders who see Banner in his green, massive, transformed state, and he is subsequently dubbed “The Hulk” by the media.
Fleeing the campus skirmish with Betty, Ban- ner resumes his human form, deciding the two must go to New York City and meet “Mr. Blue,” in actuality Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson), an eccentric professor. Sterns reveals that he cannot cure Banner, but that he has something that might help suppress the Hulk transformation. It works, apparently, and his subsequent vulnerability allows him to be acquired successfully by General Ross
Edward Norton assumes the role of Dr. Bruce Banner in Louis Letterier’s reboot of Marvel’s THE INCREDIBLE HULK.
