IRON MAN: Abducted and sequestered in a Middle Eastern cave, US arms manufacturer Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) contrives to escape in a weaponized suit, with the help of Yinsen (Shaun Toub).
Afghanistan cave. The first redesign is code-named the “Mark 2,” but after an initial test flight during which the suit ices over and shuts down, plum- meting him to earth and nearly killing him, he re- designs the suit again. Code-named the “Mark 3,” Stark solves the icing problem by building the suit from a gold titanium alloy left over from an ear- lier, abandoned project, later adding “hot rod red” paint as a finishing touch. Outside of some later, minor modifications with the palm located pulse weapon, the streamlined “Mark 3” represents the perfected design of the suit.
Soon after, Stark learns that Stark Industries weapons have been acquired by a Middle Eastern terrorist organization, despite the fact that he had suspended the operations of his weapons division. Querying his business partner on the matter, Stark learns it was Obadiah Stane—who refers to him- self as an “Iron Monger,” or war profiteer—who approved the sale, indicating that he has no hesi- tations about selling weapons to either side of an armed conflict. Returning home, realizing that the situation in the Middle East is growing worse and that he and his corporation are morally culpable for the increasing violence, Stark dons the Mark 3—and transforms into what the media will

eventually name “Iron Man.” His plan is to inter- vene in the conflict, in order to, as Stark says, pro- tect those who his corporation put in harm’s way. But Stark has critically mistaken the identity of the real enemy—the terrorist organization is able to acquire weapons from Stark Industries through Obadiah Stane. Stark does not know that it was his business partner who hired the group to kill him. When they realized who their captive actually was, they demanded from Obadiah a higher price. Fortunately, Stark has convinced Pepper to help him correct the harm of Stark Industries. She agrees to enter Obadiah’s office and copy files from his computer, in order that Stark may learn the extent of the arms deals. As she peruses the computer’s files, she comes across video footage from the terrorists revealing Obadiah was respon- sible for Stark’s capture—but now she, too, be- comes the target of Stane’s murderous intent. We should note that, after the film’s end cred- its conclude, there is a short “teaser” sequence in which Tony Stark is shown returning home to dis- cover a mysterious figure who identifies himself as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.—the formation of which acronym is a running joke throughout IRON MAN. He wishes
