Ageing of Lubricants

Oxidation Roll Tester OXI-T200-P2

For the development and use of a lubricant, knowledge of the ageing mechanisms involved is an absolute prerequisite. Understanding of the decisive processes is necessary for allowing the correct selection and appropriate combination of base oil, thickener and additives, and thus for the optimal formulation of a lubricant. Numerous testing methods are available for demonstrating the properties of a lubricant.

A test instrument which is suited for the investigation of ageing processes must subject a lubricant to mechanical and thermal stresses which are similar to or more severe than those which occur in real operation. Test instruments of this kind, such as the Shell Roll Tester for determining the shear stability as specified in ASTM D 1831, are well known. Besides the mechanical and thermal stability of a lubricant, the stability toward oxidation is also decisive for the ageing process. However, the methods hitherto known for investigating the oxidation of lubricants are not sufficient for determining the ageing characteristics, especially if the aforementioned factors are acting in combination. The new Oxidation Roll Tester OXI-T200-P2 has been specially designed to fill this gap.

On the basis of ASTM D 1831, the Oxidation Roll Tester allows the flow of gas through the rotating test vessel at an adjustable volume flow rate during the test sequence. Thus, a large surface area of the lubricant sample under investigation is continuously exposed to an oxidising atmosphere as well as to a catalytically active metal surface.

Moreover, the emerging gas can be collected for subsequent analysis. Thus, the chemical processes involved (oxidation, chemical degradation, decomposition, etc.) can be determined more accurately. Variation of the boundary conditions, such as the gas composition, the temperature, and the duration of the test sequence, provides a unique basis for the analysis of the ageing process in a lubricant.

The Oxidation Roll Tester has been designed and constructed for subjecting lubricants to stresses at temperatures up to 200 °C. During a test sequence, two lubricant samples of 50 g each can be tested simultaneously. The test instrument is controlled by means of a touch panel at the front. All relevant test parameters are indicated on this panel and can be varied here. Test sequences with several hundred hours’ duration can be performed without problems with the Oxidation Roll Tester.
