accommodation, it is not surprising that corporate travellers are now ex- pecting similar speed and convenience from their expense management systems (EMS). These have come a long way since
the days when the emphasis was on those who bought the technology and enforced usage on employees. Now, users have a voice and, as a result, suppliers are adopting, adapting or creating consumer-grade products to provide a better experience.

“The whole concept of taking consumer grade into IT started five years ago, it is not just T&E [travel and expense],” says research director for Gartner Chris Pang. “This technology is available in our personal lives so why can’t we have it in business? An expense tool allows the traveller to get reimbursed quickly, and finance to know what the balance sheet position is, not quite in real-time but in a better time frame than before. Consumer grade tools help make it quick.” The introduction of voice rather than typing as a user interface is an example. “A number of providers have come up with demos using Amazon’s Alexa,” he says.
