VDMA: machine sales to US at record level

Exports of German plastics machinery to the US reached record levels last year, according to the VDMA trade association – which warned that free trade agree- ments were “fundamental” to this growth. “After bottoming out in 2009, deliveries of German plastics and rubber machinery to the US have recovered steadily,” said VDMA plastics and rubber machinery association chairman Ulrich Reifenhäuser. In 2015, sales reached a record €719m – an almost threefold increase since 2009. The US has now overtaken China – after seven years – to regain its spot as the most important export market for German machines. Sales to the USA rose more than 13% in 2015, while sales to China fell by nearly 20%. Sales to Poland, Italy and India also rose, while those to China, the Czech Republic and Russia fell.

At the same time, German deliveries

to Mexico rose by 50% last year, making Mexico the fourth most important export market.

plastics, plastic packaging in particular, German plastics and rubber machinery manufacturers expect sales to the US and Mexico to remain strong,” according to Thorsten Kühmann, the association’s managing director. However, he warned: “Existing free

trade agreements are of fundamental importance for this. Any form of protectio- nism, on the other hand, will be damaging to the business activities of all concerned.” President-elect Donald Trump has

indicated that he wants to renegotiate the terms of Nafta with partners Mexico and Canada. Trump has also threatened the TPP

trade agreement with Pacific Rim countries. ❙ http://plastics.vdma.org
