This is significant since, due to the small size of the package, barrier requirements are challenging. Capsule capacities are in the range of 12-55cm3


and for a small


design, such as a Nespresso style, the ratio of package volume to surface area is around 0.4 (compared, for example, to 1.4 for a 0.5 litre PET bottle and 2.2 for a 2 litre bottle). Barrier performance of the capsule material must, therefore, be more than four times better to match the permeation performance of a 2 litre PET bottle.


Another significant finding was that the way in which


contents are a food product, protection is a primary factor and this has to be achieved before consideration of any sustainability benefits or cost. PTI’s research found that that the Barrier Improve-


ment Factor (BIF) varied by as much as 380 times across the 18 capsule samples tested (selected to represent the main commercially available systems).

PTI’s research details oxygen and water vapour permeation, overall dimensions, mini- mum wall thickness, 3D scans that determine active barrier surface and manufacturing process, layer- structure analysis and summary mapping for each coffee capsule type.
