COMPOST

purchase produce from other companies. There are also companies that produce spawn - for oyster mushrooms and shiitake - and a processing plant. Distributing the various activities, products and brands over several geographical regions suits Kampen per- fectly. Market research is always the starting point. “We want to get to know customers first before taking any action. The customer is king as far as packaging goes. We have 55 different labels. Supermarkets want unique products and demand food safety, which is crucially important in south east Asia.” Kampen can grow mushrooms himself. “But I don’t really have enough patience. I employ the right people, like grower Bart de Vries in Malaysia, to compensate for my own weak points. They often have a share in the company, and there is a very low employee turnover.” Kampen’s favourite activity is nurturing new startups. He keeps close track on all the business enterprises from his base in Oregon, where he lives with his wife. “That’s something I learned in the IT sector, where long- distance management is common and huge amounts of production and workflow data are generated and monitored. We have developed our own software for that purpose too.” Kampen is clearly enjoying the process of expanding his business conglomerate, and if it’s up to him, the sky is the limit. He gave us a laid back tour together with Dirk Warmerdam, sales manager of Shasta, followed by a quick farewell; another plane to catch. ◗
