FROM THE EDITOR ETFO Executive Members

PRESIDENT Sam Hammond, Hamilton-Wentworth

Welcome back! I hope the year is off to a great start for you and your students. It has been a steep learning curve in taking

on the interim editor position, but I am fi nally getting acclimatized and am excited about shar- ing some great articles with you. This issue of Voice focuses on teaching and

learning in the digital age. The essentials of good teaching have not changed since I started teach- ing 25 years ago, but the tools and resources certainly have. In Digital Human Library: Bring the Field Trip Experience into Your Classroom, Avon Maitland teacher Leigh Cassell shares an online resource she has created to connect stu-

dents through videoconferencing with learning all over the world. In Creating Spaces: LGBTQ Conversations in Middle School, Peel teachers Emily Hastings-Speck and Greg Maxton explain how a novel about coming out (written by Maxton under his mar- ried name Kentris) and an accompanying online resource for educators are helping students fi nd the courage to be who they are. In Gamifi cation in the Classroom, Sim- coe County teacher Jeffrey MacCormack describes the benefi ts of including gaming in the classroom, and offers resource suggestions. The curriculum insert features excerpts from The Heart and Art of Teaching and Learning, an ETFO resource for new teachers that is available in both print and online formats, and has its own interactive website. Resources are available to help teachers and students use digital tools and content

responsibly. The Sage Advice page offers an article by the Council of Ministers of Edu- cation, Canada (CMEC) outlining the use of internet materials in the classroom. An article by ETFO’s Professional Relations Services in the online area of etfovoice.ca offers advice on the responsible and ethical use and access of electronic devices in schools. In her column, General Secretary Victoria Réaume highlights the many ways ETFO

takes care of members’ learning needs. In his column, President Sam Hammond writes about the ETFO 2014 Annual Meeting in August and the new collective bargaining process that is unfolding. Check out this issue of Voice for detailed reports on both the annual meeting and the new collective bargaining campaign. I hope you enjoy this issue of Voice and have a wonderful school year!
