Potency and Packaging
The potency of a remedy is the number of times it has been diluted and homeopathically processed. X potencies are diluted on a scale of 1:10, C potencies 1:100. This highly simplified image illustrates the process. The Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS) defines the exact standards, tests and guidelines for each remedy. (See our FAQs, page 26)
1. The Source
Remedy sources– plant, mineral or animal**– are tested/validated and then, as defined in the HPUS, most are ground, steeped in alcohol and made into a tincture (NF alcohol) or triturate (powder - NF lactose) .
2. Dynamization
Tincture or triturate is made into the desired potency through a series of X or C dilutions. At each level, the dilution is ‘potentized’– processed with succussive, vigorous shaking*.
3. Final Form
X potency tablets are soft, quick-dissolving NF lactose. C potency pellets are treated sucrose in tiny balls with NF lactose covering.

Third Lesson in Homeopathy =
The Minimum Dose
While searching for a safe dose, homeopathy’s founding father, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, was as surprised as everyone else to find that even in infinitesimally small micro doses, the healing properties of the source substance were still present and even grew stronger if he succussed each dilution vigorously. He compared the process to that of pounding an iron rod to make a magnet. Thus his search for ways to ‘do no harm’, he established the Principle of the Minimum Dose. See pages 7 and 10 for more homeopathic principles.
*Please note: This version of manufacture is oversimplified and the “shaking” represents hours of vigorous processing. **Animal activists: Please note that other than a very few bees, only animal by-products (venom, sepia ink, lactose) are used in our remedies. A few others do exist in the industry (e.g. Formica from ants).
Which Potency?
Which is stronger 6X or 30X? Less is more in homeopathy. 30x is more dilute, but also more potent and therefore deeper acting than 6X. The benefit of 6X is that it requires less precision in selection and can be ideal for light, repeatable dosing.
The idea is confusing at best. For starters, here are some basic tenets.
1. Selection:Lower potencies cover a wider range of symptoms, so are ideal if you are not certain you have the right remedy. Higher potencies need more accurate selection to stimulate cure but cure can go deeper.

2. In general If you start low, e.g. 6X, you can repeat frequently and go higher, clearing symptoms as potency increases.
3. Severity The more severe or sudden the symptoms, the higher the potency you might want, e.g., a minor muscle ache, Arnica 6X, a bruising, 30X, after the dentist, 30C.
4. Frequency The higher the potency, the less often you dose. When symptoms improve, you can stop or reduce dosing.
5. Aggravations High potencies can stimulate more healing aggravations (like the purging of a sinus infection).
