COPENHAGEN In association with Get lost and explore

this new space, creating an intimate experience that feels like being at home with friends. It’s cosy with an open oakwood kitchen, a log fire and a library lounge. The restaurant is on a charming cobblestoned street in the heart of Christianshavn.

Late night bar La Banchina: A well-hidden surprise

There’s an amazing place called La Banchina that opened last summer in Refshaleøen. It’s a restaurant as well as a bar, and though tricky to find it’s worth the effort. During the summer they do very simple grilled fish dishes, pastas, good natural wines and beers. They have a bonfire out there and you can swim, even in winter, and go for a sauna. It faces the harbour and towards the end of the afternoon you’ll experience a beautiful sunset from the terrace. It’s like an end-of-the-world place – you can’t really find it unless you know about it.

After dark

Nabo is a new place from the founders of Kadeau which is a restaurant group headed up by the chef Nicolai Nørregaard. Nabo is a big part of the New Nordic food movement in Denmark, which sources food from the natural landscape. OEO Studio designed

You’ll come across a lot of places for cocktails but you should try the wine in Copenhagen. Ved Stranden 10 is the very definition of the Danish word ‘Hygge’ with a cosy and relaxed atmosphere. This is a classic wine bar serving natural wines. The interior is a good example of classic Danish design and craftsmanship. There is lots of wood and Hans Wegner chairs. It also faces one of the canals in downtown Copenhagen so it’s a beautiful place to sit after work and linger into the night. While it can be busy there is somehow a feeling of peace there and you can enjoy a few moments for yourself.

Save suitcase space for

There is a really great design studio called &Tradition which you’ll find on Paper Island. They showcase contemporary design from Nordic and international designers. Etage Projects is another gallery where you can see cutting edge art and design. The Apartment showcases design and

sells small furnishings, rugs, cushions, table lamps and mirrors. You should also check out File Under Pop, run by a woman who makes amazing wallpaper and ceramic tiles. It’s located in a beautiful old apartment with high ceilings and wooden floors next to Marmorkirken (Frederik’s Church) in the old Frederiksstaden district. As well as selling handmade wallpaper they stock intricately patterned lava stone chopping boards that would easily fit into your suitcase. For beautiful ceramics Stilleben is true heaven. For retro stuff there is Ravnsborggade where you can find classic vintage Danish shops selling 1950s and 1960s designs including lamps and chairs. Many of Copenhagen’s residents express their individuality through their bikes and if you’re feeling adventurous you can commission one to be made for you at Cykelfabrikken and Velo Barista. Or you can just buy some accessories – saddles and bags for example which are easier to bring home.

‘Hygge’. It’s not really a phrase as such - it kind of means cosy. But it means much more than that. It’s hard to translate because it’s more of a feeling. It’s to do with creating a warm atmosphere and a certain light around you and how this leads to a certain inner feeling of contentment. Danes spend a lot of time indoors so candlelight can be ‘hygge’ but so can going out for dinner or spending time with friends. You’ll hear people say it a lot - it’s very important to us.
