AMSTERDAM In association with

a flea market on Monday mornings on the Noordermarkt. And every Friday there’s a book market on the Spui.

Long lunch

Hotel de Goudfazant is a large restaurant with cars parked in it and you can play ping-pong there after lunch or dinner. It’s situated in an old factory in Amsterdam North. It’s not the easiest place to find – you’ll have to take a five-minute ferry from Centraal Station - but once there you’ll enjoy the atmosphere and food. Wink is a small restaurant run by a husband and wife couple and is situated in the de Pijp area. She cooks brilliantly and he is the perfect host. It’s a place where you feel at home immediately and will be welcomed as a regular.

A new (old) building to visit

notice the details such as the hooks on top of the buildings originally there to pull goods up.

Save suitcase space for

holds a large selection of art books, often handmade. You can stay for hours without getting bored. I’m constantly surprised by the selection there.

After dark

Le Hollandais is a classic restaurant. The quality of the food, wine and the staff is excellent. Ask for a table in the basement where you can see and feel the dynamics of the kitchen. And, if you’re lucky, the chef plays at the end of the night on an old Hammond organ in the restaurant. De Bloemenbar is a great late night bar. There are a lot of local people there and it’s always a lot of fun. It’s usually open until 4 or 5 in the morning.

One more night

Pullitzer Hotel: Canal house luxury The Schipol Clock: Perfect time EYE museum: Magnificent angles

It’s an old Shell Oil company building that was converted and reopened a few months ago. It’s called the A’DAM Tower and it’s where lots of creative agencies operate. On the top floor there is a bar and restaurant that recently opened. Next to it there is the new film museum, EYE. This is a beautiful, strange building, full of magnificent angles.

Touristy thing to do again

Taking a canal boat tour is often overlooked but a lot of people who live in Amsterdam still do this themselves because when you’re on one you realise why Amsterdam is built like it is. When you have the perspective from the water you can really see the canal houses and

7 COMPANION

Anything by the designer Maarten Baas. He’s the guy who made the big clock at Schiphol Airport. It has this milky glass on the front and looks as if somebody is standing behind it and drawing the time then wiping it out. It’s actually a 24-hour video projection. You’ll find some Maarten Baas designs to buy in the Droog design shop. Meanwhile, one of the smallest, most niche and undiscovered bookshops in Amsterdam is called Boekie Woekie. This shop

CitizenM combines budget and luxury and is a new style of hotel made up of shipping containers. The Pulitzer Hotel opened recently, a five star hotel right in the city centre on the canals. It’s inside 25 beautiful, inter-connected canal houses. Here you get an experience of what canal life is really like in Amsterdam.

Local lingo

If there’s one word you need to remember it would be ‘Lekker’. It has many different meanings and can be used when you are satisfied after a great meal, is the answer when someone asks you how you’re doing and can be used ironically when you’re disappointed about something. It’s an easy, multifunctional word to remember.
