Buckner expands parenting program to Southeast Texas
BEAUMONT, Texas – Buckner Children and Family Services has expanded its efforts to strengthen families by starting a local program that equips parents with skills to better raise their children.
mentoring and discussions of topics such as family dynamics, problem solving and healthy child development. The program helps parents understand issues before they arise and coaches them through how to handle them in a healthy way. Jeff Ross, Buckner program director for
Project HOPES and transition programs, said the initiative is particularly timely for Jefferson County, which has a higher than average rate of child abuse and neglect. “The overarching goal of Project HOPES
Project HOPES, which is supported
by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, includes one-on-one
is to reduce neglect and abuse in Jefferson County and serve families of infants to 5-year-olds,” he said. “However, our focus is building on the strengths and skills of the loving and nurturing families we have here in our community.”
The program looks to build upon existing services offered by Buckner and other organizations to make a positive impact on families. “Project HOPES will support and foster
those strengths and connect families to resources that are already being provided by our valued community partners,” Ross said. “Specifically, we have adopted an evidence-based curriculum that helps prepare children for educational attain- ment while enhancing the child-parent relationship.” Beaumont is the second Buckner
Project HOPES location following the recent launch of the program in Longview, Texas.
