OCEAN FISHING REPORT By Terrence Berg

SAN DIEGO PELAGICS: The half- and three- quarter day boats from the San Diego landings continue to hammer on the yellowfin tuna and pick at the yellowtail and dorado. Most fleets have shifted back into Mexican waters on overnight and longer trips because of the incredible volume of yellowfin, but even the half- and three-quarter day boats reeled in tuna in good numbers. This bite has all but overshadowed the good bass action. For exam- ple, the half-day Daily Double out of Point Loma Sportfishing had 17 anglers on its half-day trip last week and landed six yellowtail, 26 calico bass and 16 sand bass. The three-quarter day boats are doing real damage on the yellowfin. Mission Belle out of Point Loma Sportfishing was out with 16 anglers on Aug. 18 and landed 53 yellowfin and four dorado. Also on Aug. 18, Malihini out of H&M Landing had 45 anglers who caught 54 yellowfin. San Diego out of Seaforth Sportfishing had 49 anglers the following day who landed 91 yellowfin, three dorado, and one skipjack. The yellowfin have replaced the yellowtail in these counts. The overnight and longer trips are mostly seeing limit-style tuna action in Mexican

waters. Pacific Voyager out of Seaforth Sportfishing returned Aug.19 from a three-day trip and the 14 anglers on board had 198 yel- lowtail, 117 yellowfin and 48 dorado. Voyager, also out of Seaforth, was on an overnight trip with 14 anglers and landed 23 dorado, 19 yel- lowfin, five skipjack and three yellowtail. Old Glory out of H&M Landing ran and overnight trip on Aug. 18 with 22 anglers and had 53 yel- lowfin; Legend was on a 1.5-day trip with 30 anglers and had 90 yellowfin. New Lo-An out of Point Loma Sportfishing was on a 1.5-day trip on Aug. 18 with 32 anglers and had 96 yel- lowfin and one dorado.

LOS ANGELES-ORANGE COUNTY COAST UPDATE: The incredible volume of yellowfin tuna made it difficult for the three-quarter day and longer trips running out of Los Angeles and Orange County landings to focus on any- thing else in recent days, but there continues to be good numbers of yellowtail, dorado and bluefin tuna in this region. The three-quarter day Freelance out of

Davey’s Locker has had both yellowfin and yel- lowtail scores in recent days with big loads of anglers. On Aug. 18, 78 anglers landed 16 yel- lowfin tuna, two yellowtail, one dorado and one skip jack. One day earlier, 79 anglers land- ed 120 yellowtail and five bonito. Thunderbird, on an overnight trip out of Davey’s Locker Aug.18, had 19 anglers who landed 32 yel- lowfin and 11 skipjack. She also returned from

a 2.5-day trip on Aug. 16, and the 20 anglers aboard landed 69 yellowfin, 10 bluefin and one dorado in U.S. waters. Native Sun out of 22nd Street Landon was

on a three-quarter day trip Aug. 18 with 40 anglers and landed 73 yellowtail, 45 bonito, 40 barracuda, one sheephead and one red snap- per. The half-day Monte Carlo on its morning trip had 39 anglers who landed 41 yellowtail, 68 barracuda, 38 calico bass and two sand bass. New Del Mar out of Marina Del Rey

Sportfishing was on a half-day trip Aug. 18 with 71 anglers and they caught 56 yellowtail, 23 calico bass, 16 bonito and one lingcod.

CATALINA UPDATE: Most skippers still are not running all the way to Catalina, leaving fishing there to the private boater fleet. The fishing is not bad, however. Pursuit out of 22nd Street Landing is a con-

sistent exception; she had 55 anglers aboard last week for a full-day trip and landed 131 yel- lowtail, 147 bonito, 32 calico bass, three halibut and one barracuda. Freedom was on a 1.5-day trip with 37 anglers and landed 34 bluefin tuna, seven yellowtail, seven bonito, 15 calico bass, four whitefish and one sheephead.

CHANNEL ISLANDS NEWS: There continues to be a major push of pelagic species into the Channel Islands with many of the boats in the region focusing on yellowtail and bonito. Aloha Spirit out of Channel Islands Sportfishing was

out on a full-day trip Aug. 18 with 15 anglers and landed 20 yellowtail, 30 bonito and one white seabass. Mirage, also out of CISCO, returned last week from a local two-day trip with 17 anglers who caught nine bluefin, 50 yellowtail, 45 calico bass, one halibut and one barracuda.
