HOSPITAL HOME RESCUES RESIDENTS FROM HEAVY DOORS
ABOUT The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH) provides specialist nursing care for ex- servicemen and women. The home provides residential care for those require nursing care and rehabilitation. The home’s care allows residents to live
as independently as possible in a comfortable environment they can call home. The Queen Alexandra has 60 beds for both permanent and short term care.
THE PROBLEM The staff at Queen Alexandra were struggling with the fire doors, which made accessibility very difficult. Andy Hastings, a Manager at Queen Alexandra Hospital Home commented: “The corridors and entrances to the kitchens with trolleys going in and out are very busy. We found the staff were wedging open the fire doors for easier access as they were an inconvenience shut."
THE SOLUTION After some research, the staff approached Fireco for a solution. Andy said: “We needed a product that would keep our fire doors open and stay compliant. We got in touch
with Fireco and requested more information on the product Dorgard as it fit our requirements. We’ve since installed them in the corridors, offices and on one of the doors which lead into the kitchen. “
Dorgard is a wire-free, fire door retainer which holds fire doors open at any angle. The unit continually listens for the sound of the alarm and once verified, will automatically close the door.
THE OUTCOME • Greater accessibility for all staff throughout the home
• Fully compliant with regulations
• Improved safety.
Since Dorgards have been installed at the home, the staff have seen a big improvement in accessibility. The staff can now walk through the building freely without the obstruction
of heavy fire doors while keeping compliant.
Andy commented: “You just mount the unit to the bottom of the door, put the batteries in and you’re good to go. There’s no wiring involved, it’s just brilliant. Everything we’ve installed does what it says on the packet. We can walk around the busy areas without having to open and shut heavy fire doors and we’re still regulated. If the alarms go off, the doors shut and they’re not disruptive.”
