In the developed world, we are privileged to walk into a supermarket and be overwhelmed by the choice of fresh produce on offer. For those of us who don’t live in the countryside, it can be easy to forget how difficult it is to grow the fruit and vegetables that line our aisles.


Given our distance from agriculture and the rise in popularity of organic farming, the use of pesticides has become a hotly debated topic. Those opposed to chemical intervention on farms raise concerns about its impact on people’s health and the environment.


This month, I spoke to the director general of the European Crop Protection Association to discuss the safety of pesticide use and what the organisation is doing to protect farmers and the public from potentially harmful substances. Find out what he had to say on page 19.
