WHAT’S NEW? ALLEGION GETS BEHIND

FIRE DOOR SAFETY WEEK Specialist security manufacturer, Allegion, will be showing its support for Fire Door Safety Week (FDSW) with a host of awareness activities.

FDSW takes place 26th September 2016 to 2nd October 2016, with the aim of raising awareness of the critical element of fire safety in every commercial, public and multiple occupancy building. It is further supported by the British Federation of Woodworkers' (BWF) #ClickItKickIt campaign, which is raising awareness of the dangers of wedging fire doors open and empowering people to photograph fire doors being wedged or propped open.

The BWF has stated that: "A wedged- open fire door renders that door useless. It can no longer protect your safety or your property. It’s an open door to danger."

Allegion has 130 years of experience keeping people safe and will continue this by supporting FDSW with:

TOMORROW’S MENT ’S TODAY

Deciding how the physical spaces in a building are used is an integral aspect of FM, and when managed effectively it can have a significant impact on the bottom line of a business. Graham Perry, Business Unit Director of iSite, explains why it is the accuracy of a company’s data that is key to successful space management.

For any business, making the most of limited resources is extremely important and with property costs representing a

Worryingly, a recent report from the Government has shown that there were 213 deaths and more than 6,700 casualties from building fires in England in the six months of April to September 2015. Full year figures are likely to show a significant increase on previous years.

significant overhead, using space as efficiently as possible is vital.

With FM teams often managing large estates, with multiple properties, this naturally creates an abundance of data that can add value to a business. However, this can only happen if the information is accurate, then analysed and interpreted effectively. The integration of CAFM systems with the platforms used by other functions within a business is key.

When this is achieved, value is added in a number of ways; by helping business owners to identify under-utilised space, helping to forecast future office requirements and ensuring departments that regularly collaborate are located close to one another.

Integrating HR and property data can help to forecast how much space a business needs to house its future workforce. This can be achieved by comparing growth in headcount against lease events and

Paul Barrows, Demand Creation Leader at Allegion, said: “It's terribly sad to read the latest Government figures on deaths and casualties from building fires. At Allegion, we offer door closers that link with an electro-magnetic hold open system to the fire alarm, which will release a door to its closed position when the fire alarm sounds. This negates the need for any sort of wedge, or even worse, propping the door open with a fire extinguisher.”

square footage, while also helping to determine how that space is configured. When you consider an average desk in zone one in London costs more than £9,000 per year, changing an office to reflect the way people now work, has the potential to deliver significant space and cost savings.

The ability to access smart control systems, desk utilisation systems and even light or motion sensors can also help to inform workspace design by determining how many people are using the office and at what times.

Using Big Data solutions to harness information from disparate sources and presenting it in one simple- to-navigate platform can prove invaluable as it has the power to enable much more strategic decision-making. In this context, not only would this help to provide the right space for different types of employees, it can help to improve efficiencies and support significant cost savings in the process.
