TRADITION MEETS

INNOVATION: Concepts for efficient

energy supply

From the village smithy in Mühlhausen (Bavaria, Germany) first mentioned in 1879, Burkhardt

Energy and Building Technology has developed and grown today into a company operating from five international locations. The product portfolio ranges from gasification of wood

pellets, to other intelligent cogeneration and geothermal heat solutions.

Tradition and constant innovation has made the Burkhardt company what it is today: one of the leading German companies for energy and building technology. “We excite our customers in Europe and throughout the world with individually tailored solutions and expert consulting, as well as fast and reliable service,” explains Claus Burkhardt, Sales Manager at Burkhardt.

FOCUS ON BIOMASS Since 2005, while continuously expanding its building technology

business, Burkhardt has been intensively focusing on renewable energies, such as solar technology, geothermal energy and biomass, especially wood pellets. “With our wood gasifier we produce clean, perfectly recyclable lean gas for our wood gas engines,” explains Burkhardt. “In the last few years, the technology has been fine-tuned and developed to series maturity and consistently optimised by us. It is a far cry from the original wood gasifiers of the past. We are dealing with a true

high-tech domain,” he continues.

Systems are available in various performance classes. The flagship V 3.90 wood gasifier together with the CHP ECO 165 HG, for example, generates 260 kW of thermal and 165 kW of electrical energy, while the ECO 180 HG diesel unit generates 180 kW of electrical energy. Since the beginning of 2016, the

V 4.50 wood gasifier has also been available with a 50kW electrical output – reaching efficiency levels of up to 80% for a guaranteed minimum of 7,500 operating hours per year. Several interesting projects have already been completed:

• Germany, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Ladbergen project: Carried out in collaboration with “Goldene Mühle” and Münsterland Energy, the project comprises 32 systems and supplies the Münster/Osnabrück airport (100km west of Hanover), a sunflower oil producer, as well as a business park with multiple customers via a 4.5km local heat distribution network. The total output amounts to 5.8 MWel and 8.6 MWth.

• Japan, Ueno Village project (170km northwest of Tokyo): In the spring of 2015, the first Burkhardt wood gasifier outside of Europe was put into operation. Since then, the CHP system has been used to control the temperature in greenhouses of a shiitake mushroom farm – heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. The initial concerns about pellets made of native timber potentially affecting the sensitive gasification process have proven to be unfounded. After the successful start of operation, the mushroom farm is now considering a second system from Germany.

• UK, 50kW projects: The first V 4.50 wood gasifiers with CHP smartblock 50 T from Burkhardt have been successfully operating in the UK since the beginning of this year. One poultry farm and two wood chip producers are being supplied with energy. The heat output of the wood cogeneration system for the wood processing facility is used to dry the wood chips, saving on the need for wood in the process and thus generating more end products to be sold. The produced electricity is completely used by all three operations. Each system combination generates 50kW of electrical and 110kW of thermal energy at a

consumption of 40kg of wood pellets per hour.

INTERNATIONAL INTEREST The importance of green energy is growing worldwide

and international customers play an increasingly important role for Burkhardt. Apart from the local market in Germany, Burkhardt also has a strong presence in Italy and a rapidly growing number of customers from the UK and Eastern Europe. Further contacts are being established in Japan. Burkhardt offers its customers ultra-efficient and, above all, highly reliable solution for converting renewable resources into climate-neutral thermal and electrical energy. The system means independence from fossil fuels and their price fluctuations and, in stand-alone operations, also independence from electricity suppliers.
