COVER STORY
Clinical Cleanliness & Cosiness Can Coexist
The care sector treads a difficult line between providing superior hygiene 24/7 in an inviting home-from-home setting, whilst keeping operating overheads low.
Care homes include many different functional areas with varying cleaning needs. While hygiene may be critical in treatment and catering areas, front of house needs to deliver appealing levels of cleanliness from the kerbside, beyond the front door, through corridors, and into residents’ bedrooms and bathrooms.
When it comes to cleaning, hospitals actually have a huge advantage over all but the most modern, purpose-built care homes – miles of straight corridors, lifts between floors, identical rooms and lots of hard flooring. In contrast, keeping a bespoke, often characterful property poses all manner of cleaning challenges.
Many facilities are carpeted throughout, including day rooms and dining rooms – and however short the walk from the kitchen or vending machine, it’s precarious with a laden plate or hot mug. Spray extraction machines, like the Puzzi range from Kärcher tackles all manner of greasy

food spills, as well and tea and coffee stains in visitor areas. Models with adjustable handles, easy to meter detergents and excellent water recovery have been installed so the Puzzi range is simple to operate and leave carpets virtually dry.
Round the clock care can mean cleaning opportunities are a challenge, and staff rooms in particular rarely get the care they deserve. If your communal areas are prone to countless crumbs and sticky spills a compact wet and dry vacuum will rapidly clear the detritus.
Steam cleaning is a relatively new kid on the block, and while domestic machines are now prevalent, the benefits of their tougher, commercial counterparts are not so widely known. Steam cleaners are excellent multitaskers for cleaning hard floors, tiles, stainless steel, chrome, kitchen appliances, bathroom fixtures and glass.
Kärcher’s SG 4/4 steam cleaner is certified to kill 99.999% bacteria,
without the need for chemicals, which for users and residents alike is great news; meaning no more unpleasant odours from aggressive cleaning agents. Steam restores original finishes and surface textures as well as reducing slip hazards on floor surfaces. With commercial models being no bigger than a standard vacuum cleaner, they are easy to manoeuvre in en-suites and compact kitchens. Steam can even be used to rejuvenate upholstery and curtains.
Introducing efficient cleaning technology can completely overhaul your cleaning plans, reducing manual effort, freeing up time and opening up longer cleaning windows due to the machines’ quiet running, discrete appearance and rapid drying times.
While the thought of an expensive price tag on a cleaning machine can be off-putting, it’s worth considering the value you place upon your own and your cleaning team’s time – labour costs can represent up to 90% of total cleaning costs in manual
