INDUSTRY COMMENT

REDUCE SLIPS, USE WATER?

Green World Innovations has been hard at work to find a new, environmentally friendly way to clean floors effectively while simultaneously reducing the risk of slips. Their solution? Using water – more specifically, Stabilised Aqueous Ozone. Here, they explain how this method works.

Slips and trips account for the most common cause of major injuries at work with 90% of these resulting in broken bones. The cost to the industry from such accidents is significant at a hefty £500million per year, and legal actions following injury can be extremely damaging to businesses.

The cleaning process itself can contribute to the risk of slips to those entering the area being cleaned, as well as to cleaning operatives themselves who are at high risk of slipping when working on flooring. The good news is that when thorough, effective floor cleaning procedures are put in place, a big difference is made between surfaces being a high slip risk and an acceptably low slip risk. People very rarely slip on a clean, dry floor.

Simple, inexpensive changes can be very effective to prevent slipping. Comprehensive training for cleaning staff is essential in order to minimise the risk of slips and a good management system is needed to identify problem areas, decide what to do and act accordingly. Cleaners themselves need to be made aware of how to safely clean floors without slipping on surfaces left damp by a mop, for example. Almost all slips occur when floors are wet or dirty and if a floor has a smooth surface even a tiny amount of contamination can cause a real problem.

One of the main challenges that staff face when cleaning floors is that many cleaning products need to be measured and diluted accordingly and can still leave a residue, which needs to be rinsed off or in some cases just gets left. Residue on flooring not only leaves an unsightly smear but

considerably adds to the slip risk of a surface; while rinsing adds more water, increasing the drying time and the opportunity for falls.

“It sounds far-

fetched but one way to eliminate slippy residue and

proactively minimise the risk of falls is to use water.”

It sounds far-fetched but one way to eliminate slippy residue and proactively minimise the risk of falls is to use water, more specifically Stabilised Aqueous Ozone (water mixed with stabiliser and oxygen) for floor cleaning. This proven method of cleaning sanitises surfaces virtually instantly and provides an impressive 70% reduction in slips compared to those cleaned with traditional chemicals.

Stabilised Aqueous Ozone is the result of mixing ordinary tap water with oxygen in the Tersano lotus® PRO. It is 100% safe for the environment and 50% stronger than bleach, 50% more powerful than chlorine and can be used to sanitise any surface. The Tersano lotus PRO is cutting-edge technology that recreates ozone – nature's cleaner – straight from the tap. Cold tap water is mixed with a stabiliser and oxygen filtered from the outside air, the water is then charged with electricity to

cleaning solution.

Once installed, the Tersano lotus PRO has the capacity to produce up to 12 litres of Stabilised Aqueous Ozone per minute at the touch of a button, meaning that there is no need to spend thousands on multiple cleaning products. After 24 hours the Aqueous Ozone turns back into its original state and can be poured down the plug when cleaning has finished, so there’s absolutely no down-stream pollution.

It’s already being used by some of the world’s biggest brands such as McDonalds, PwC and RBS and is a proven solution for preventing slips, sanitising the surface thoroughly and being more environmentally friendly. It really is the future of ‘green’ cleaning.
