starting at 11 am on 5 November Sale: The Misumi Collection of Important Works of Lacquer Art and Paintings: Part III 8 November, 2pm
Te two previous sales of the Misumi Collection were ‘white glove’ sales and included a number of masterpieces by Zeshin, one of Japan’s most celebrated lacquer artists. Admired by Western collectors for well over a century, Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891) was one of the most famous names of the late Edo and Meiji era art world. Tis third auction also includes works by Shibata Zeshin, with highlights being a hanging scroll lacquer painting (urushi-e) of two crows, circa 1885, which has an estimate of £30/40,000, a lacquer wood panel with bell, crickets, grasses and full moon, 1877, with an estimate of £150/200,000, and an inro with carp ascending a waterfall, circa 1870- 1890, estimated at £40/50,000. And a miniature inro by Shibata Zeshin depicting writing utensils and a plum branch, circa 1870-1880, which has an estimate of £20/30,000.

Tis sale include a selection of Meiji-era (1868-1912) works of art including an ovoid inlaid iron case by the Komai company of Kyoto, estimated at £10/15,000 and a gold-lacquer kodansu, cabinet, on a stand from the late 19th/early 20th century, estimated at £5/6,000. Ceramics include a large Satsuma bowl by Ryozan, from the late 19th/20th century, estimate £20/30,000. Other cloisonné works include an early vase by Namikawa Yasuyuki (1845-1927), estimated at £20/30,000 and a cloisonné rectangular tray by Namikawa Sosuke (1847-1910), which has a pre-sale estimate of £15/20,000.

Chiswick Auctions are the only auction house in the UK that conducts Chinese paintings auctions and this autumn’s sale include a landscape painting of Xuancheng in Northeast Anhui Province by Huang Binhong (est £20/30,000), works by Qi Baishi, Pu Ru and the female artist Fang Zhaoling, plus a 30-metre handscroll by Xu Naigu (1785-1835) with colophons and dedications by more than 60 artists and literati figures from the Qing dynasty (est £15/20,000).

Tese sales include a wide range of Chinese works of art, including a Yongzheng mark and period vase that was recently discovered mounted as a lamp.

Highlights from the sale are drawn from many private collections and include important archaic bronzes with notable provenance, exquisite imperial ceramics, fine jade carvings, huanghuali furniture, as well as paintings from renowned modern Chinese artists, textiles, and Buddhist art.

A highlight of this sale is the pair of famille- rose sanduo cups, previously from the collection of ET Chow, and white carved vase, both from an important private collection, represent the aesthetic of the two successive Qing emperors. Te cups, which have been enamelled in the European-inspired famille-rose palette that evolved through the use of white enamel, have the auspicious pomegranate, peach and finger citron respresentations that have been delicately rendered on a pure white ground.

Alongside the auction of Important Chinese Art, Sotheby’s are presenting their inaugural St George Street Sale of Chinese Art. Comprised mainly of several private collections of porcelain, bronze and jade, with the sale offering collectors a variety of works to suit a broader market.

Lempertz annual autumn Asian Art series of auctions are being held over two days, starting with Japanese, Indian, and Southeast Asian art. A highlight of the first day’s sale is a pair of octagonal octagonal Kakiemon bowls decorated with twin phoenixes, Japan, circa 1700 (est Euro 20/30,000). A highlight of the second day is a gilt-bronze figure of Amitabha Buddha, Dali Kingdom, Yunnan Province, 12th/13th century (est Euro100/150,000).

Tis wide-ranging sale includes Buddhist bronzes, as well as Chinese porcelains, lacquers and paintings, stone works and furniture with many lots coming from important European private collections. One such highlight is an imperial Chinese ruyi jade sceptere, Qianglong period, from an important European private collection, valued at Euro 80-120,000, and two Chinese ceramics – an underglaze blue ewer from the Yongle period and an imperial vase, liukongping, Qianlong period, with a four-character Qianlong mark and of the period, both estimated at Euro 60-100,000. A Chinese painting highlight is Qi Baishi (1864-1957) from 1957, depicting grapes in a basket with persimmons, estimated at Euro 40-60,000. Tere are a good selection of bronzes, mainly from private German collections and a 13th-century, silver-bronze figure of Buddha Shakyamuni, estimated at Euro 30-50,000.
