PRIORITISING WORKPLACE WELLBEING IN THE NIGHT-TIME INDUSTRY


Working in the night-time industry comes with its own unique challenges. Demanding customers, long and irregular shifts and working at night contributes to some employees feeling particularly stressed. A full, holistic state of wellbeing relies on many aspects of life being well — financial, physical, social and mental health. Night-time industry employers must take steps in order to help employees achieve a strong sense of wellbeing.


Managers of licensed venues can help employees by developing a wellbeing programme and implementing changes within the business designed to increase wellbeing and boost employee engagement. This includes taking care when arranging shifts and rotas — managers should ensure all working hours are monitored, shifts aren’t changed last minute,


and employees have adequate time to rest and recover in between shifts. Introducing cost-effective small changes in the workplace such as free fruit, break out areas and optional social activities can be a good way to instigate change and work towards a more positive workplace culture.


It’s important for managers to encourage staff to talk about their mental health. Managers should feel confident facilitating conversations about mental health with employees and know the best way to sign post their staff to further professional help where necessary.
