Social prescribing S

HAW is a new and exciting free service for local people in the

Kingsbridge district and is based on the concept of ‘social prescribing’. I am sure some readers out there may well have heard of the term ‘social prescribing’. It is a con- cept that is starting to gain a lot of attention up and down the country, finding it’s way into national newspapers/ magazines/radio and the like.

of experience within the health & wellbeing industry, SHAW are well placed to ensure that they deliver meaningful and sustainable positive outcomes for people. Monty Halls is a broadcaster,

“When I first heard about

So what is ‘Social Prescribing’ anyway: Social prescribing is a means of enabling GP’s and other frontline healthcare profes- sionals to refer a patient to a link worker who will then introduce that individual to a local, non-clinical service or intervention. Our link workers (Community Connectors) are Claire Jeffrey & Cath Park, two ladies born and bred in the area, and with rich and relevant experience they are SHAW’s greatest assets. The point in joining these groups and getting involved in social interventions is to break this familiar and vicious cycle which we know only too well; this is one of isolation which compounds a lot of illnesses whether due to physical long-term conditions such as diabetes or mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

The story so far: SHAW is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to help enable & educate local individuals to be resilient in their own wellbeing. Its founding director, Dr James Mottram, is a local GP

in Kingsbridge and he wanted to develop a service for his local community to enable people to access social interventions more easily, and in doing so improve their wellbeing. SHAW will not only be helping on an individual level, but also hopes to assist in making the area a more compassionate community which will connect local people of all generations with each other. SHAW will introduce individuals to appropriate voluntary and private organisations/agencies who might be able to support and facilitate resilience with the main aim of improving lifestyle, knowledge, happiness and health. With its board of local trustees, who have a vast range

SHAW and social prescribing it seemed like such a sensible thing to me” Monty Halls . Patron of SHAW

speaker, naturalist, marine biologist, travel writer and leadership specialist and SHAW feel very fortunate to have such an esteemed figure as their patron. “When I first heard about

SHAW and social prescribing it seemed like such a sensible thing to me: I am a strong believer in the benefits of exercise for physical and mental well-being and gladly support SHAW in reaching out into the

local community to enable people to get more exercise and also be more active participants in community activities. I can see how the NHS would eventually benefit from such a pro-active approach to health and wellbeing.” However, SHAW is not just about introducing individuals

to physical activity based opportunities. SHAW are excited about lots of community activities from photography to writing clubs, from art to DIY groups, and lots more.

Why Kingsbridge District: SHAW are very aware of the many fantastic assets in and around the Kingsbridge area and want to utilise the potential of both land and water. We believe this area is the perfect place for this to really flourish, and we want to support and build on the great efforts of the existing voluntary sector agencies by connecting with them and utilising them more effectively. The success of SHAW will be largely determined by the public energy and enthusiasm it creates along its journey. SHAW recognise the huge amount of goodwill and positivity out there in the community and want to value people as a resource as this can be an incredibly empowering experience for all involved.

Looking ahead: SHAW will be starting to see individuals in their service in early 2019 and will be initially based out of the Kingsbridge & Salcombe Fire Stations. Please visit our website if you want to find out more or contact us. www.southhamsareawellbeing.co.uk
