Dartmouth Caring

For over 30 years Dartmouth Caring has offered a wide range of services and support to our community, from Memory Cafés to reading groups, from benefit advice and support to counselling and trips out. About a quarter of those in our community have benefitted directly from this work. These services have in

recent times been expanded to include palliative and oncol- ogy support, with appropriate qualified staff. With the exception of lunch clubs, these services are

provided at no charge to the client. Donations from the community, over 120 volunteers and dedicated staff have made this possible but there is a limit to what the charity can do through fundraising, to plug the gaps that exist in the local support available. Clearly there is a very real shortage of paid domiciliary and home help in Dartmouth. Through our contact with hundreds of clients every year we are very aware that many need long term help with maintaining their independence. For some of these we can provide support and for others

there is support from friends and neighbours, the statutory services and from others in the community. However, there are many who would like more than the basic support available and would wish for additional help, making their lives more comfortable, and for which they would be willing to pay.

In April 2019 we are launching the ‘Dartmouth

Caring Home Help Service’ aimed at meeting these needs, with Dartmouth Caring acting as a not for profit provider. To do this we will begin recruiting in March and subsequently make the service available from late April. We will carefully match a Home Help colleague to each

client to ensure a personal service. Services offered will include a mix of services from the following list: • Cleaning and housework •

Shopping (escorted and non-escorted)

• Companionship • Planning and preparation of light meals • Support with attending appointments • Organising household paperwork •

Time off for carers We are keen to hear from anyone who would be

interested in doing this work with us. Everyone we employ will receive paid leave (28 days pro rata), sick pay, pension, travel, uniform and paid training. Employing our own staff to deliver this service will

increase our ability to refer clients into our other services sooner, such as; lunch clubs, patient transport, specialist dementia, oncology and palliative care nursing service, visually impaired reading group, etc. Booking a Home Help can be done in many ways, phone

call, email, online through our website, whatever is easiest for the client. Tel: 01803 835384 www.dartmouthcaring.co.uk
