Couple find tawny owl stuck in woodburner


ACOUPLE in Headcornwere as- tonished to see a tawnyowl glaring at them through the glass of their woodburner. The RSPCAwere called in to help


rescue the baffled bird. The husband and wife, spooked


by strange noises coming from their bedroom wall, discovered the owl screeching at them from their wood burning stove when they went downstairs the next morning to in- vestigate. The bird, identified by RSPCA In- spector Dave Grant as a tawny owl, had come down the chimney flue and ended up trapped in the unlit stove.


RSPCA Inspector Grant said:


“The householders couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw whatwas in their woodburner. They initially tried to rescue the owl themselves. But after experiencing the sharp talons of the frightened bird, they closed the stove doors back up and wisely called the RSPCA for help. “By the time I arrived, the tawny owl appeared to have calmed down.


Wearing gauntlets, I was able to open one of the stove doors, gently bring him out and carry him blink- ing into the sunlight. “I checked his eyes and feathers


for soot damage, but he was unaf- fected. So once this lovely bird had found his bearings, he flew straight off to enjoy his freedom again. This was a good release and we were all

pleased with the happy outcome.” The householders are now plan-
