20 LAND kept in production

about selling the property, the group of volunteers sought the support of Heather Pritchard to help secure it.

“We pulled Heather on board and she came up with the plan to have the land transferred from TLC to FarmFolk CityFolk,” recounts Diana Brubaker, who has been involved since 2012. “With the land secured and given we had this relationship with five families for a long time, we were encouraged by Heather to consider developing a co-op.”

Funding

In total, $500,000 was secured for TLC with $200,000 coming in the form of creditor forgiveness and $300,000 in direct funds. The

successful transition followed months of negotiation with TLC, a private donor and the Vancity Community Foundation to secure the funds required to maintain Lohbrunner Farm in trust. It’s just one model of acquiring land, but Pritchard says they are looking at other models for securing land in different parts of the province. “The model we are

activating is that the trust will own the land, and there will be a community group that will take on managing it,” says Pritchard.

Lohbrunner Community Farm Co-operative is now a service co-op working on three main principles: They will farm the land organically and manage it to maintain biodiversity; they are working to serve the Langford

community to support food production and local food security; and they want to provide an opportunity for people to get hands-on experience with farming through educational programs and community events.

Long term leases

The farm will also offer long-term leases to young farmers and is working with Young Agrarians to help make that connection.

“I am proud of all that we have accomplished to support Norma Lohbrunner’s vision of saving her farm into perpetuity,” says Brubaker. “I am proud of the work that our group has made in becoming a collaborative, trusting and supportive team to get to where we are today. And I am proud to offer the community of Langford a place that they can get their hands in the soil and learn what the land has to teach them.”

With one successful

acquisition behind them, the Foodland Trust is looking for other prospective properties, and is keen to talk to landowners about how they can leave their land in trust for future farmers.

“If you don't have someone to take it over, consider putting it in trust.” “We have this wave of young farmers willing to

come in and provide us food, and we've priced our farmland out of reach for them. They can't afford it based on what they are going to get from what they are producing. They absolutely need support,” she adds. “We have this puzzle and we’re putting the pieces together.”
