Athlete is junior Carly Moyerx, a runner on the North Buncombe High School cross coun- try and track teams. She has competed

in the sport all three years, and in- tends on continuing into her senior year. “I think that coming out of mid-

dle school, I had done cheerleading and soccer, and they just weren’t really my fit,” Moyerx said, “I was looking for something I could do, and that I know I can get good at. Running, I guess, is one of those things that if you put in the work you can get good at it.” Prior to joining cross country and track the

junior competed

in soccer and cheerleading. She played soccer off and on from kin- dergarten to seventh grade. Then during seventh grade Moyerx joined the cheerleading team and

cheered for two years. Both sports offered something she enjoyed, like competition or a strong team bond, but it wasn’t quite enough. “I guess, at soccer I wasn’t amaz-

ing at it,” Moyerx said. “I was just kind of average, I guess. Cheer- leading was pretty girly, and I don’t know, just a lot different from my personality.” It was the combination of com-

petitiveness and strong team bonds that played into her love for her sport. According to Moyerox, the team this year collectively has a strong work ethic, making for a good season. Her current PRs are in the 5k is 20:40, mile is 5:57, and two mile is 13 minutes. “Working off of each other is a

big thing, and I’ve had a lot of peo- ple push me to do my best,” Moy- erx said. “But also encouraging each other to do their best. I enjoy that everyone supports each other.” Moyerx has two siblings, one brother in 12th grade and a sister

in 8th grade. Her sister also com- petes in track, according to Moy- erx, and she hopes to be a role model for her sister. As the Scholar Athlete, the junior also works very hard in class. With the help from her sport she has been able to bal- ance, and work hard to achieve her goals both on and off the course. “It’s taught me a lot about how

when you want to quit, you know, sometimes you just can’t,” Moyerx said. “Also taught me a lot about time management...you have to pace yourself like you do when you are running.” Moving forward Moyerx hopes

to continue improving in cross country and track, even though she does not plan on running in college. “I don’t see this as something I’m

necessarily [going to] do in col- lege, but I do want to continue to improve next year,” Moyerx said. “I think that’ll I’ll continue to run for the rest of my life.”

senior swimmer, signed to attend and swim at Mars Hill Univer- sity this coming fall. Graduating in May the senior looks forward to starting her college career. “It feels really good,” Shapiro

said. “I’m excited I get to commit to something I really, really love, and I’ll get to do it with people just as committed.” Shapiro has not always been

a swimmer. She use to run cross country, but due to fracturing her tibialis Shapiro had to go into rehab. This rehab included doing work in the pool, such as aqua jogging. During this time of being in the water the senior began to consider swimming as an alternative to running.

“The first time she went to

swim practice was for rehab for her leg, and she was so de- termined that she was not going to swim,” Susanne Shapiro, her mother, said. “She was like, ‘I’m going to go get my leg better, and I’m going to run.’ When we walked in three of the girls knew her, and we spent a week there and she was like, ‘I think I’m go- ing to swim.’” She started swimming her

sophomore year, and swam com- petitively her junior year. The first workout surprised her, dis- solving her previous notions of swimming being easy. From there Shapiro worked hard to become a strong swimmer, going from relatively knowing free- style to knowing all four of the strokes. “She’s always been a leader on

the team, and a good role model, keeping a positive attitude and encouraging her teammates,” volunteer Coach Kaley Ballard

said. The team is only varsity with

a men’s and women’s side. They practice together but compete in their own events. Prior to Shapiro the NBHS swim team has graduated five athletes who committed to compete in their sport in college.
