OMNIPASS ADAPTER ACHIEVES INDUSTRY-FIRST UL SAFETY CERTIFICATION
Deluge nozzle adapter is first to receive certification for safe operation in extreme marine conditions.
Tyco Fire & Integrated Solutions, the world leader in fire and security solutions, is announcing that its OmniPass adapter has been certified by independent safety science firm Underwriters Laboratories (UL) as a filter adapter for use in saltwater environments. The adapter, available only through Tyco, is specifically designed to protect deluge nozzles from debris or other seawater by-products that could result in a blockage, and is unique in receiving the highly-valued certification. UL’s rigorous testing regime found the OmniPass adapter capable of maintaining nozzle performance even when subjected to extreme cases of pipe debris.
Deluge systems provide an essential first line of defence in offshore fire suppression, helping to contain fires and reduce the likelihood of explosions and obstructed exits. Due to the operating environment of offshore rigs, however, these systems are directly exposed to sea water by-products such as corrosion, debris and marine growth which often result in nozzle blockages. A single blocked nozzle can pose extensive hazard risk for an offshore rig.
With the oil and gas industry facing increased scrutiny and an ageing infrastructure, the OmniPass adapter is a logical and cost-effective solution that will help to reduce blockages and ensure deluge systems function as intended.
VAN OORD ORDERS SMD TRENCHER
Soil Machine Dynamics (SMD) has secured a contract with Van Oord for the manufacture and delivery of a qTrencher 1600.
This contract follows the deployment of SMD’s qTrencher 1400 on Van Oord’s Gemini Wind Farm.
Scheduled for delivery in q1 2018, the trenching
machine will be supplied with an SMD designed umbilical winch, along with jetting and mechanical cutting tools. Additional functionality includes beach operation to offer cable installation for export and inter array campaigns.
The equipment will be loaded directly onto Van Oord’s state of the art cable-laying vessel Nexus from SMD’s Turbinia Works in Wallsend, UK.
The qTrencher 1600 is scheduled to be deployed from the Nexus onto various wind farm projects in 2018.
SMD Services added it will be providing a service support package for Van Oord. This will include training of technical and operations staff on the vessel during the equipment’s first year of deployment. A package of maintenance and strategic spares will also be supplied.

This certification demonstrates the ongoing commitment of Tyco to improving safety for staff and assets in the oil and gas industry. The OmniPass adapter offers a simple and affordable way for operators to address the issues of blocked deluge nozzles and reduce the dangers posed by ageing systems. This is the beginning of a safety revolution - we look forward to helping our offshore customers reduce these longstanding risks.

UL, which evaluates over 96,000 products annually and provides the gold standard for safety certification worldwide, found the OmniPass adapter to comply with its applicable requirements. These were specifically created to evaluate the nozzle adapter for filtering functionality.
UL found that OmniPass adapters:
· Have been tested and proven to withstand extreme conditions in laboratory testing including salt fog corrosion testing, elevated temperature moist air testing, and stress corrosion testing for brass parts. The stress corrosion test specifically targets brass alloys to test them for

galvanic corrosion resistance, and the brass OmniPass adapter passed this test · Have a friction loss equivalent as low as 1.0ft (0.3 m) of DN25 pipe and only impact nozzle K-factor up to 10 percent of nominal K-factor, ensuring that the pressure and discharge rates remain at an acceptable level regardless of debris
As a result of these findings, the OmniPass adapter is UL listed for deluge nozzles up to 5.5 K (K79).
The OmniPass adapter is manufactured by Tyco under license from RigDeluge Global Limited.
