TYCO CASE STUDY

LEADING IN OFFSHORE LIFE SAFETY & ASSET INTEGRITY

TYCO PROVIDES AN INNOVATIVE AND INTEGRATED APPROACH TO DELIVERING LIFE AND ASSET SAFETY SOLUTIONS AND SERVICE

The global oil and gas industry is still trying to recover from a deep downturn. The oil price crash has put a major squeeze on margins, with many of the industry’s giants recording losses in recent years. The offshore sector is feeling the brunt of this setback, as executives look to make savings by cutting staff numbers and reducing expenditure around servicing and quality, environmental, health and safety policy (qEHP). In such a high- risk environment, it is essential to ensure that these reductions don’t result in disaster.

The question that remains is how can the industry manage its new cost base while crude oil prices remain low and still maintain the reliability and safety of its offshore operations? It’s something that Tyco has dedicated a great deal of effort and time to addressing, and previous articles in this publication have covered the benefits of deluge system overhauls and partnerships with experienced providers in helping businesses achieve the balancing act. If standards are to be maintained, something has to give - and it shouldn’t be the quality of protection provided to employees.

Innovation in service

To help overcome this difficulty, Tyco is pioneering an innovative safety service model, integrating the delivery of life and asset safety solutions and service. By despatching highly-trained engineers to cover off multiple requirements at once, Tyco can provide the same level of service at a reduced outlay.

innovation without compromising on compliance, safety, reliability and customer service. The model enables oil and gas operators to address multiple preventative maintenance needs at once, at a time when their budgets are increasingly squeezed.

Tyco has a unique breadth of expertise in the industry, across multiple service disciplines. By taking full advantage of the wide range of Tyco service offerings along with its multi-disciplined engineering approach, Tyco can help rig operators to deliver a streamlined preventative maintenance strategy with reduced people on board (POB) and offshore visits. All this results in a healthier balance sheet, but without the danger of reduced safety standards.

One example of this approach can be demonstrated by the regulatory maintenance requirements of an offshore galley firefighting system. It is routine for an HVAC team to carry out maintenance on galley ducting while a separate fire safety team are required to maintain

the active fire suppression elements of the safety critical system. As Tyco have expertise and competency on both these tasks under one roof, it is able to undertake the complete preventative maintenance work scope with a single offshore trip and with reduced POB.

By implementing this service model, Tyco can help oil and gas operators to reduce their maintenance costs by as much as 20%, an essential cost saving in the face of the current financial pressures.

Avoiding reactive maintenance Visiting platforms to carry out preventive maintenance is a regular part of offshore life. All assets have a range of safety critical systems that require routine testing and maintenance to maximise process safety and efficiency. On top of that, many systems require visual checks at much more frequent intervals - some deluge systems must be checked monthly for full functionality, for example, particularly if they have shown signs of unsatisfactory performance in the past.
