Tony Hatton began his career as a window cleaner together with his brother in law in 1961.
“I chose window cleaning because this was a way to work for yourself whereby no capital was required... Only a chamois leather, scrim, bucket and a ladder together with sheer hard work and determination”.
At the time Tony owned a BSA motorbike with a sidecar that he shrewdly adapted as a means of transport for the window cleaning business, by removing the side car and attaching the ladder and bucket to the frame – both Tony and his brother-in-law set off on the adapted bike to clean the 80 houses on his round at half a crown each (12.5 pence)... a long time ago! Plus 5 blocks of 3 storey flats that were cleaned off a 3 part ladder.
This continued until The ‘Big Freeze’ of 1963 when it became impossible to continue window cleaning and it was necessary to seek other forms of employment. In 1965 Tony joined a company called “Daily Office Cleaning” and he took on a Managerial roll before progressing to Executive Director.
Tony and his wife Sylvia have five children and when they started Supervision Assured in 1975 – Sylvia with the help of their older daughter Sandra, managed the office and sales... Then in later years their two sons Nigel and Russell joined the company, followed by son-in law Steve and daughter Alison.
In 2000 the Watford based company was divided into Window cleaning and Cladding cleaning; (Supervision Assured (2000) Ltd: headed by Tony and Sylvia as Directors and Nigel as General Manager with Lesley joining the company in 2002. The Office and General Cleaning (Supervision Assured Ltd) run by Steve, Sandra and Alison.
Tony says: “I enjoy being involved day to day with the business. It has become a ‘way of life’; it keeps me motivated and active”.
Our Health and Safety is paramount to the success of our company, and we ensure that our window cleaners are fully trained in the use of water-fed poles and Industrial Powered Access Equipment with IPAF. Our clients have different requirements for health and safety so we are accredited by Altius, Alcumus Safecontractor, Constructionline and CHAS. We have also achieved Certification of Registration in Quality Management System ISO 9001:2008 and Environmental Management System ISO 14001:2004
We joined FWC in 2004 to be able to access their wealth of knowledge regarding all aspects of window cleaning, from health and safety to the latest systems and products available.
We would like to congratulate FWC on their 70th Anniversary.... and we are pleased to have achieved 4th position in the Window Cleaning Company of the year 2017 in the top ten companies selected as finalists.
