ntil this past July, it was obvi- ous to anyone taking a quick glance at the fitness centre at British Columbia Institute of

had felt fresh, exciting and modern. But by 2016 the space was clearly un- inspiring and the equipment sadly outdated. The long-time members were most-

ly content and comfortable with the antiquated equipment and well-worn surroundings. As for the new and younger members, well, there weren’t many of these.

The consequences of maintaining

the lacklustre status quo hit home in late 2015 when newly-hired fitness and wellness coordinator, Tye Embree, presented one of his superiors with a 25-pound piece of steel that had just snapped off a leg curl/extension machine. “This is why we need new equip-

ment,” said Embree. “It could have seri- ously injured someone.” With upper management then on

side, the multi-step process of refresh- ing the space and filling it with new equipment was begun. Is your facility’s equipment in need

of an upgrade? Here is the basic pro- cess that BCIT followed to bring its fit- ness centre into the 21st century:

1. Create a strong team “We started from scratch by re-writ-

ing all the job descriptions and hiring a new team,” says Tom Moore, director of student operations. The new staff members included Embree, who has 20 years experience in the field and had renovated multiple centres in the past, four personal trainers and 10 part-time student weight room attendants.
