Exhibition explores the rich daffodil heritage in Cornwall

By STEPHANIE GREATOREX

AN exhibition exploring the history of Corn- wall’s daffodil industry is being staged by the Archives and Cornish Studies Service. ‘Dazzling Daffodils’ features material from Cornish archives, including items never seen on public display. Among a range of photos and documents from the Cornwall Record Of- fice, the Cornish Studies Library, Penlee House and Falmouth Spring Flower Show archive is material borrowed from the La- narth archive. Lanarth, in St Keverne, was once home to P D Williams, Cornwall’s ‘Daffodil King’ in the 1920s and 1930s. Mr Williams, a cousin of J C Williams of Caerhays, was famed for the daffodils he bred and his variations sold – and still sell today – across the world. The archive contains evidence of the inter- national interest in daffodils between the First and Second World Wars, with Ameri- can invoices being paid in gold after the 1929 Wall Street Crash, and pictures and certifi- cates showing P D Williams’ success in Dutch flower shows. Also on display are wa- tercolours of some of P D Williams’ daffodils. Chloe Phillips, learning lead for the ser- vice, said: ‘We are delighted to be displaying such a seasonal exhibition this year and are particularly excited to show some of P D Williams’ amazing personal archive for the first time. Research for the exhibition has also uncovered photos and treasures from our own collections, so we really hope people embrace this celebration of a different type of Cornish gold.’
