Over the next two decades, NYHS course offerings continue to evolve. In 2009, Mr. Bill Hesse retired after twenty six years as the academic dean. Mr. Bob Court was hired and came to NYHS after forty years in public schools. Mr. Court led an effort to increase lab-based science and engineering subjects and seat time for students.
In the spring of 2015, Rabbi Bernie Fox announced that he would retire at the end of the 2015-16 school year, after thirty one years as head of school and thirty six years at NYHS. During the 2015- 16 school year, NYHS leadership began a national and international search for the next head of school. At last year’s gala, we celebrated Rabbi and Shirley Fox’s tenure and legacy at NYHS. In June, 2016, the NYHS family dedicated a Sefer Torah in honor of Rabbi Fox and celebrated with him and his family at the Sefer Torah Dedication chaired by past president, Jack De Leon Z”L.
The search for a permanent head of school entered its second year. Fortunately for NYHS, Rabbi Ron-Ami Meyers of Congregation Ezra Bessaroth, agreed to serve as the interim head of school for the 2016-17 school year. At the end of January, 2017, Board President, Steven Phillips announced that Mr. Jason Feld, Dean of Students at Shalhevet High School in Los Angeles, will be the new head of school starting in July of 2017.
This school year saw a number of new developments. Thanks to partnership with the Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education and the Samis Foundation, freshmen can elect to take a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) curriculum. NYHS added additional College in the High School general studies offerings in which students may earn college credits through the University of Washington. NYHS also instituted all-school Friday parasha class as well as an all – school Friday Ethics Series.
NYHS has come a long way from that handful of young men in the basement of SHA. Over 550 young men and women have passed through its doors. More Jewish youngsters than could have been imagined forty two years ago are receiving the benefits of this extraordinary educational experience. Today, Northwest Yeshiva High School is independently recognized as one of the premier high schools in the State of Washington. The NYHS College Preparatory Program is competitive with other college preparatory programs. Its Judaic Studies program is designed to instill a lifelong appreciation of Jewish learning and love of Israel. NYHS graduates are recruited by some of the finest colleges and universities in the nation, as well as the foremost Yeshivot and religious seminaries in the U.S. and in Israel. Most importantly, the majority of NYHS graduates continue their Jewish education beyond their years at NYHS.
