information session Suffolk, Va.-The Suffolk Workforce Development Center will host a Job Corps Information Session on Thursday, March 30, 2017, at 9 a.m. The Suffolk Workforce Development Center is located at 157 North Main Street, Second Floor.


Suffolk and Franklin residents, ages 16 to 24, are welcome to attend this free session which will cover a variety of professions including automotive technology, CNA/LPN, culinary arts, electrician, health careers, landscaping, office administration, painting, pharmacy tech, plumbing, welding, security, and more.


Attendees are requested to follow the following dress code: Males – button or polo shirt, slacks, belt, shoes Females – dress, skirt, slacks, blouse, shoes


It is requested that all attendees not wear jeans, sneakers, or shorts.


If you would like to learn more about the Job Corps Program, this is the first step in the admissions process for interested students. Job Corps is the nation’s largest career technical training and education program for students ages 16 to 24. Administered by the U.S. Department of Labor, Job Corps provides low-income men and women with an opportunity to gain the experience they need to begin a career or advance to higher education at no cost to the student.


Pedro Wallace selected as new


Virginia Beach CIO Virginia Beach, Va.- Virginia Beach City Manager Dave Hansen recently announced the appointment of Pedro Wallace as chief information officer and director of the Department of Information Technology Department. Wallace is currently the CIO in Chesapeake, VA.


"Pedro is a great find for the City of Virginia Beach," said Hansen. "He is a forward-thinker with a strong reputation as a collaborative problem solver. He helped the City of Chesapeake make significant technological advances despite some fiscal challenges. His command of what it takes to lead the transformation to Next Generation and cloud-based systems will keep Virginia Beach focused on making sound investments in emerging technologies," he said.

The Center for Digital Government recently named Virginia Beach as one of the most technologically advanced large cities (populations of 250,000 to 499,999) in the nation. The Department of Information Technology has 174 employees, an annual operating budget of $30 million, and a six-year capital budget of $50 million.


Wallace has 34 years of public and private sector experience in the information technology field. Prior to joining the City of Chesapeake in 2007, he served as the director of information services for the City of Boynton Beach, FL. Wallace also worked in Guilford County, NC, and for Harcourt Brace & Company.


Wallace earned a bachelor's degree in business management from Nova Southeastern University and is an accredited Certified Chief Information Officer. His appointment is effective April 13, 2017.

City Council meetings... Norfolk - regular meetings are held on the first and fourth Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. and the second and third Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.


Chesapeake - regular meetings are held on the second, third and fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.


Newport News - regular business meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m.


Suffolk - regular meetings are held on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Hampton - typically take place on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month at 7:30 p.m.


Virginia Beach - meets on the first four Tuesdays of each month. In July the meetings are scheduled on the first two Tuesdays only. Formal session begins at 6 p.m. Portsmouth - meeting dates are the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
