DT - TEXTILES (AQA 8552)
Students opting for textiles in KS4 will follow the new Design and Technology Specification or a Technical Award. A final decision will be made once the final course content specification is approved by the examination board.
In Year 10 students are taught a range of skills through completing a range of mini projects. The Level 1/2 Technical Award in Fashion and Textiles enables students to work in a team, similar to the real world. The course is exciting in the way it teaches about the manufacture of textiles, commercial fashion, home furnishing and career paths. Students are also introduced to the way materials are used imaginatively by the fashion Industry. Both GCSE and the vocational qualification will fulfil the entry requirements for academic and vocational study post 16.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
D&T Textiles is suitable for all students in GMS who are aiming for academia or vocational route at post 16.
COURSE CONTENT Unit 1: Key skills (Internally assessed)
Students complete a number of projects that develop their practical and theoretical skills. This includes researching the work of a designer to inspire creations; researching textile related companies
or brands to understand how the industry works; and researching career opportunities. The projects cumulate in a fabulous fashion show at the end of the spring term when the GCSE and A-level students exhibit their unique products.
Unit2: Extended making project (NEA) (Internally assessed)
Students showcase their knowledge, understanding and skills in a project set by the examination board. They submit one product for their examination piece. The project accompanying the product must show: planning, development, making, testing, evaluation and communication.
Unit 3: Fundamentals of DT including fashion and textiles
(Externally assessed) - written examination
The written examination assesses knowledge, understanding and ability to evaluate the fashion and textiles industry; the industrial and commercial processes that exist within it; the materials used and their properties; and the career opportunities available.
In the past, students have provided their own fabrics for the practical tasks. After a consultation process, GMS now operate a group ordering scheme. All candidates contribute £30 in the first year of the course, which enables the school to order all the main fabrics required for their practical tasks throughout the two years.
Assessment:
GCSE grades are numbered 9 to 1: the top grade being 9. Technical Award grades are Level 1 Credit up to Level 2 Distinction*. These have an equivalent GCSE grades. For example, a Level 2 Pass is equivalent to a current grade C.
