10 Uncle Tom Cobley UNCLE TOM

How’s the year going so far for you? Are you achieving your goals? Are you ground down by tiredness and fed up fighting off constant bouts of illness? If life isn’t quite working out how you’d like it to, why not try practicing meditation? For if you can make some time each day to meditate you will soon reap the benefits.

At first sight, meditation seems a bit silly and pointless, conjuring up images of those living outside mainstream society, choosing to live alone while they search for enlightenment and salvation. How can that be relevant to our busy lives? If this is how you feel, I do urge you to give it a try, because regular meditation will improve your stress levels and help you to discover a sense of calm.

If you think of your mind and body as a cluttered room, meditation helps to clear away all the junk and gives you the chance to swap all that negative energy for fresh clear positive energy. Ways forward and answers to problems you may have been grappling with will pop into your mind as if by magic. Regular meditation also helps to bring clarity to your feelings and thoughts, helping you connect to your intuition.

Meditation can also help to increase your appreciation of the present and to live more mindfully and in a more fulfilling way. In Steven Covey’s book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, the seventh habit is Sharpen The Saw. This basically means if you continuously cut down trees without taking time out to sharpen your saw, you will be ineffective. In this context, meditation is one way in which you can sharpen your saw. It will leave you both energised and rejuvenated.

So if the year isn’t going to plan, do give meditation a chance by committing to meditate just five minutes a day for the following month. And if you think you don’t have time? You would definitely benefit from it!
