SINGLES

The house-party ambience of some cruise ships makes them perfect for single travellers wanting to meet like-minded souls. Small and medium-size ships are generally better for single travellers, who can end up feeling lost and anonymous on larger vessels carrying thousands of people. But special drinks parties aimed at solo travellers, plus communal tables at meal-times and shared activities, make it easy to strike up conversation with fellow travellers. The close- knit ambience of river cruise boats, which generally take between 100 and 200 passengers, also lend themselves to solo cruisers. Companies catering for this market often have dedicated single cabins, but these sell out fast, and singleton may have to pay a hefty supplement for a double cabin.

Solo-friendly cruise lines include: APT, Avalon

Waterways, Azamara Club Cruises, Croisi-Europe, Cruise & Maritime Voyages, Crystal Cruises, Emerald Waterways, Hebridean Island Cruises, Saga Cruises, Thomson Cruises, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld, Viking River Cruises.

ADVENTURERS

Sailing to the ends of the earth has never been so easy – or so varied – thanks to the range of different lines offering everything from hardcore expeditions on ice-breaker ships into the depths of the Arctic, to soft adventures where you scratch the surface of a destination while enjoying the trappings of a luxury vessel. The Polar regions are obvious adventure territory, but there are intrepid sailings to more tropical outposts such as the Galapagos Islands, Papua New Guinea or Borneo. Alternatively, explore the remote Russian Far East, Madagascar and the Kimberley region of Australia, or sail around the tip of Cape Horn.

Adventure lines include: Celebrity Cruises, Chimu Adventures, Crystal Cruises, Exclusive Expeditions, G Adventures, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Hurtigruten, Ice Track Expeditions, Ponant, Poseidon Expeditions, Quark Expeditions, Silversea.

CULTURE-VULTURES

Sometimes it isn’t enough to visit different destinations on a cruise itinerary; you need to live them and breathe them as well, and that’s where cultural cruises come in. Some companies specialise in such voyages, while others dabble with one-off themed sailings or individual excursions and specialist talks. Some ships have libraries full of knowledgeable tomes, while others will organise more pastoral or cerebral pursuits; from acting classes and singing workshops to fencing lessons and craft classes. Some river cruises also carry cultural themes with excursions to meet locals in their homes or private concerts in grand palaces.

Cultural cruises include: AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Azamara Club Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Cunard, Hurtigruten, Scenic, Tauck, Viking River Cruises, Voyages to Antiquity.
