PULSE

has brought out the best in them. It has allowed children lacking in self confidence, to have a purpose and sense of importance/responsibility in school.

Have you noticed a difference in the children since increasing your sporting provision?

Greenfields Primary

GREENFIELDS, MAIDSTONE

Why did you apply for the School Games Gold Mark?

Our school had significantly increased the amount of sport we were providing and competing in over the last year. Applying for the School Games Mark provided us with the chance to show our success through an approved body and stood out as a mark of achievement for the school, not only amongst our pupils and parents but also within our community and to other schools in Maidstone and to the School Games Organiser.

How did the school increase the number of entries into level 1 and level 2 competitions?

At level 1 we brought a competitive element to PE lessons by introducing competitions and tournaments within lessons and also held Cricket, Football, Netball and Athletics competitions during the summer term. We took the view last academic year that we would enter every level 2 competition available to us and we did! This meant that not only did we enter Football, Basketball and Netball competitions, we also took part in Squash, Golf, Trampolining, Quick Sticks Hockey, Tennis, Boccia and disability Rugby and Cricket.

What sort of impact have you seen on the children who are young leaders/part of the school sports organising crew?

We have involved children who were not normally recognised as the ‘sporty ones’ and giving them this opportunity

A massive difference in all areas of school life. Our school has a high percentage of pupil premium and we are in an area of high social deprivation. PE is now seen as an important subject, children have their PE kit in school and are excited about lessons.

They are now active and engaged. Attendance has improved because children want to be in schools where they can attend sporting competitions, in the same way behaviour is good as they understand that to represent the school they need to work hard in all lessons. Children have grown in confidence in their ability, and now have a ‘can do’ attitude. The ‘blue’ district t-shirt has become a coveted prize that everyone wants to get and sporting achievement is regularly celebrated in assembly each week.

For me one of the special parts of increasing sport is taking our SEN children to competitions. Realising the importance to these children of getting a letter in class, standing up in assembly and winning a medal alongside their peers has been so rewarding and demonstrates how important sport can be to everyone and the difference it can make. Violet Smith was awarded Outstanding Female Performer at the Kent School Games Awards and Kezzie Unsworth was runner up in the Outstanding Disability Performer category.

What would you say to a school who were thinking of trying to obtain the Gold Mark?

All of the above and the massive sense of achievement for your pupils and staff. It was like winning an Olympic gold receiving it in our school! We congratulated the pupils for their effort in achieving the mark and they rewarded me with a certificate!! We are so proud to tell everyone about our School Games Gold Mark and it identifies us as a sporting school in Maidstone.
